SSN - Name Change - Mariage License/Certificate

Hello everyone!

I have a quick question that I hope you guys know the answer to! I hope this is not too confusing, but I read a while back someone having trouble with their AOS because of their name on either their SSN, their mariage certificate, or the name they applied their AOS with... Does it ring a bell?

So I got my SSN number today, and after we receive our mariage certificate back, I will go get a name change done.

What I'm wondering is, when I apply for the AOS, I'll apply with my married name right? Should I wait to receive my new SSN card to send off my AOS petition? Will it be a problem if on the mariage certificate, my maiden name is stated rather than my married name?

I just want to make sure I don't do something stupid that I could have avoided and then get a RFE...

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, VJ has been a blessing throughout this journey!

the only recent issue i saw was with an expired i-94 or one that expired during the process.

apply for the AOS in your married name so your green card is in married name. you can apply for ssn in married name as well, HOWEVER this seems to be hit or miss depending on the office you go to. i had no issues some did. all it means is if you apply for ssn in maiden name youll have to change it later on .

I applied for both in my married name. Took 3 weeks to receive the SSN card, a little bit long but it arrived ok, with my married name well spelled. Also, i didn't even put my SSN number on my AOS application (because i didn't want to wait to get the card before sending my package). I didn't receive any RFE yet.

you dont need an SSN number to apply for AOS. If you have it put the number on if you dont, dont put the number on. It doesnt make a difference they dont RFE or delay you for no SSN. most people haev to file AOS before they get their SSN because they need ead to get ssn anyways. ( product of waiting to long to apply for ssn after entry.)

Thanks for the replies guys.

So I guess if I do a name change and apply for AOS under my married name they'll clue in and not wonder why some of my paper work is under my maiden name?

I've been trying to figure out the whole deal with SSNs too, after all the VJ guides say to do it first thing after arriving in the US.. but also that you might have to wait a couple weeks before your name is in their system. I am not going to stress over it, will apply after my wedding with my married name and I should still have several weeks on my I-94. If they want to give me trouble at least I have Kevin with me now to help me deal with them.

You have to apply for the AOS in your married name. I Sent my AOS papers off Aug 23 and left the SSN blannk. All you have to do to change your SSN to your married name is complete the form and go to the office with your passport, SS card you received in your maiden name and a certified copy of your marrage certficate. I asked about this when i went to the office even though i was married and applied for mine in my marrieed name i just wanted to know. I got my SS card yesterday in the mail, one week after going to the office and applying for it. Glad you made it to the USA.

i brought my birth certificate, my passport and my marriage licence, that was it..they can connect the dots and thats all they need according to the site.

AOS and SSN are two different things, and they have abosolutely nohting to do with each other. what you do with one has no impact on the other. But if you want your green card Ead etc in your married name fill it ALL out in the new married name.

I had a problem with my name, but it wasn't related to getting my SSN or GC. It was a problem I had with the DMV and their immigration database. I had no issues at all having my name changed on my SSN card.

Just one thing to keep in mind- in order to change the name on your SSN after your I-94 expires, they will normally want to see an EAD or a GC. It's not a big deal, but I wouldn't waste my time trying to go down to the SSN office before you receive either one of those two things to have your name changed on the card.

Ok, so basically, I can file the AOS in my married name, even though my SSN is not in my married name yet?

Of course - you're including your marriage cert and that validates the name change for AOS. Many of us don't even have our SSN when we file for AOS. I was one of them :)
