I know absolutely nothing of this world of marriage scammers. And since my wife and I are being punished because of these folks (and the stupidity of the consulate monkeys), I'd like to know what goes on.

How do they set this stuff up?

How much money is in it?

Is it anything like in the movies, where they get someone into the U.S. and then the person works as a slave for several years to pay it off?

It seems like a bunch of rubbish to me. I do know that Taiwan and Vietnam have a huge marriage thing going on -almost all the flights between the two countries are filled with marriage-brokering folks in various stages.

It is not something I follow but I have seen quite a few news stories about rings being busted.

From what I can gather it is more of a family investment, and then chain migration.

It varies by country. In the case of Vietnam it has to do with family relationships. The US only allows immediate relatives to be petitioned for, and often with long wait times.

Setting up a marriage for a relative is a way around those restrictions. This is why questions of how the couple was introduced are important.

As far as money, I've heard numbers of between $5000-10000 quoted. Thats what the USC is paid for the marriage.

The indentured servant thing happens too, but more often then not, through container ships across the pacific.

from what i heard, it's more like 20-40, but really, it depends on the case, for the US.

from what i understand, in other countries like Taiwan, Korea, it's not really a sham marriage, the Taiwanese or Korean "buys" the woman, often times paying $1000-3000 to the family, and some money to the broker. afaik, i don't think there are cases where a Vietnamese family would pay money for a sham marriage in Taiwan or Korea.

A friend of mine told me it was a shame that I loved Thuy because he has a cousin that I could marry and he would pay me 30k.... not worth it in my book in any case.. looking at a heavy fine and prison time if caught... from what he said it is still very common...

It all depends on whether she's still a virgin or not. If she's under 21, the price will be at its highest, $35k or more. Once she's reached 40, bleah, $10k max.

Just remember, life over there in VN is NOT real! Your money will be worth a LOT less once you get back over here. Back to reality, cowboy!

You would not believe how many times I was offered money by people living in my wife's village in order to marry their daughters and bring them to the US. I was shown plenty of pictures of girls in the village who they promised would be a "good wife" for me.....

i don't think it's that high. according to this video, it's $10k, and she's nowhere near 40 and a virgin. of course, it all depends...

Do they do part exchanges?

I doubt it has anything to do with the age of the girl or whether she's a virgin. The US citizen is GETTING the money - not PAYING the money. Why on earth would anyone pay a US citizen MORE money for marrying a pretty young virgin, and LESS money for marrying a middle aged divorcee? Shouldn't it be the other way around?

Also, the girl's family in Vietnam isn't paying for this. The girl's family in the US is paying for it. How much they pay depends on how much they have, and how much they think it's going to take to persuade a US citizen to go along with it. Being introduced by a member of the girl's family in the US and having a low income are a deadly combination because they both dramatically increase the odds that the US citizen is being paid to help the girl immigrate.

Somebody once said on this forum that they believed girls with high income petitioners sailed through the consulate in HCMC. There may be some truth to this, and the above would be why. I know for a fact that there are VN families in the US who are paying US citizens to marry VN girls (and guys), and it happens a LOT.

i have never heard of being offered diffented amounts of money for different ages. I have heard of more money if the lady has kid(s). 30k is the normal going price. 15 after the "marriage" and the rest once the girl gets to America. All cash transactions of course. The girl's side pays for plane tix, accomadations, paperwork, ceremony, a little "coffee"/spending money, etc.

What's in it for everyone involed:

Viet bride: Money. Opportunity. Once she's here, she'll be making more money than she every dreamt of. She can support her family, she will be the pride and joy of the clan. She will be their cash cow. If the girl makes it over here, she works and pays off the debts. Normally, a relative fronts the money.

Relative: They get cheap labor and a housekeeper. they will pay the girl less than what a nornal person would get in the idustry: nails, grocery, sweat shop, dry clearing, chicken farming, resturant, etc. Since the girl will be staying with them, she will be expected to do the household chores.

UCS: He get a little pocket change and a few trips to VN that he would have otherwise could never afford.

Everybody wins. That's why it happens. There is basically zero chance of getting caught. The illegal rings my be in the head lines, but there is seriously no chance of being caught. The only thing that is of concern is the possibility of one side playing the other.

My wife used to teach English in China and she told me she was asked by different people a few times to marry someone for money. She said one offer was for like 30,000 and another offer was as low as 5,000 dollars. Of course she didn't do it because she was worried about getting in trouble and didn't want to risk them not paying her.
