State Direction and conformity and obedience to all public institutions are essential if we are to drive out wanton and undisciplined and unauthorized attitudes and behaviour from society.

Freedom to weed out the undisciplined who are not concentrating on furthering the objectives and desired image of the State's citizens is the first essential freedom.

When did school uniforms become fine?

I remember a while back when public schools weren't allowed to have uniforms. Now, I see many with them. I think they're acceptable in "alternate" or "magnet" schools where the kids "choose" to attend, but I didn't think it was legal in the towns where there's only one school or the "basic" neighborhood schools or whatever. Last I heard, if it was mandatory for the kids to go there, they couldn't be required to wear a uniform.

School uniforms really picked up steam from a recommendation of Clinton during his presidency. He didn't come out and say it should be mandatory and that parents could opt out but many states and school districts made it mandatory anyway. Appellate courts have always found in favor of the defendant in these cases and the Supreme Court has yet to accept a case.

They are pretty much universal in the UK so perhaps here is more evidence of the US sliding towards the European model

My school insisted on school uniforms but the Head of the Board of Governors also owned the only authorized school uniform shop.

My hat lasted 2 minutes on day 1 - the other boys grabbed it and threw it down the 'frog hole' and spit on it until it was untouchable.

Nobody wore their expensive cap after day 1 - ever

Hair was never much of an issue as if a boy wanted to walk round looking like a Nancy then it was probably good info for the others.

In the US it seems popular for teenage boys to wear girls hair styles and them it's all short hair after school

it's a public school, not a private one. That's the key difference here.

As a public school, having discriminatory practices in effect is not exactly par for the course.

Then don't complain about public schools and the government. On one hand some love charter schools, yet on the other hand cry when schools try to do what they can to promote learning, which includes structure and uniforms.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Crips! A throw back to the 1960s when I had to cut my hair (and I had some too!).

I never understood the schools' obsession with this. Dress codes are fine but hair? Long? Short? Whatever, as long as it's clean and groomed should be the individuals' choice.

Kenny G - the darling of romantic middle-aged women everywhere - would probably have to have his locks cut!

This isn't sexism. Men and women, boys and girls, are different. They can be expected to dress differently. Part of the point of a dress code is to require that students roughly adhere to societal norms to avoid causing a distraction. Since societal norms are different for boys and girls, the dress code can be different as well.

If school "A" follows your concept on Hair regs, .... what about Hair color, can this same boy with clean and groomed hair also have green or multi colored hair?

How about hairsprayed spiked?

This is the problems schools wrestle with today.... someone always taking it one step farther.

And the Parents instead of helping... actually are part of the problem today.

Schools are there to provide an education, not promote what is cool or the latest trend. Discipline is one of many reasons it's utilized in the military and most private schools.

Uniform should be mandatory in schools, hair within reason. When I look at some of the teenagers, I do have to wonder what the heck their parents are thinking.

Then again I grew up in a household where my dad was my father, rather than trying to live vicariously through me or become my best buddy.

Kenny G should have his head forcibly shaved and dyed blue for his awful crimes against music.

If you're in an elevator..."it must be Kenny G."
