Wow, I can't believe how many of us know people who illegally immigrated!

Although it doesn't anger me, a girl I grew up with got pregnant by a man from Indiana and then just moved there sans visa back in December or January to give birth and stay. She complains about being bored and about not being able to go back to Canada. I'm sorry, but NO SYMPATHY from me. I know she knew the correct process, her best friend (whom I also grew up with) immigrated as well (I think on a CR-1). And now this girl (the one who illegally immigrated) has what I assume is an under-the-table job.

I pity her because she's going to have a heck of a time trying to AOS. I asked her about it once and she seemed very misinformed. She didn't seem to realize she needs to be a LPR before gaining citizenship. When I asked her about citizenship/visa/AOS stuff, she said, "No, we can't afford it. It's $3000 to become a dual citizen. So much money."

I don't know how much it is to just move and AOS but I don't think it's $3000...

Anyway, yeah, we took the tough road, but it's the right road and like Sprailenes said, I'm not losing any sleep over possibilities of getting banned, etc.

Unfortunate, how this country I love so much allows people up to no good to continuously get away with things like this and put those of us doing the right thing in the correct manner constantly get jerked and abused. MY spouse is from a so called high-fraud country and has no opportunity to get a visitors visa so it really ticks me...

The N-400 (Naturalization test) isn't $3000!! My fiance did it earlier in the year, and it was about $800 I believe... maybe $900.. I can't remember, but it was under $1000 for sure. Even with the AOS, which is $1010 (assuming it hasn't changed)... that's still under 2K.

It's still a lot of money, agreed.... but not 3K!

Yep I know a friend of mine whose sister did the same #######. Met some guy on the internet, came down to visit, never came back. Worked illegally for a few months, and even came back from there to visit family in Canada and still got back into the US lying about her purpose. Eventually decided to get married and boom that was it. I'm just shaking my head at the whole thing. I don't even know if she's even bothered to apply for anything either, she was one of those that thouhgt boom they become automatic citizens when they get married. Ugh, sucks people are so stupid about the whole process and they still get away with ####### like that...

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...

Yeah, $3000 seems crazy. I'm guessing the only money she'd have to pay is the $1010 plus possibly a medical (assuming you have to do this regardless of how you became an LPR). Poor her, I'd educate her but it's not my place. I suggested she check out this website but she didn't seem interested. Her loss...!

I agree totally. I can go to sleep at night knowing the government isn't going to "catch" me for something I shouldn't have done. I don't understand how people can disregard the law to do what they want. This isn't trivial stuff...it's your entire life. Your home, your family, your career. Why mess with that?

The gov't is also sending mixed signals to people though about the immigration process as well. I've had 2 attys tell me about the 30, 60 90 day rule. As explained to me, if you enter the US, try to AOS in 30 days, they'll think you came to the US with intent and deny. I was told back in Jan that many clients AOS after 60 days and have no problem whatsovever, no questions asked about intent. If the gov't says one cannot enter the country with intent, but chooses not to inquire about intent after someone waits to AOS after 60 days, what message does that send? I can see how it would be tempting.
