I have an interesting question for y'all.

I came here initially on a F-1 then I started my OPT. I met my now wife right before I started my OPT. Since I was a nurse I was never really worried about my immigration status (turns out that even with the preferential nurse treatment it will take 2 years). Anyways, we talked about getting married before any immigration matters came up. And we were planning on getting married in fall of 2011. Anyhow, I finally talked to a lawyer and found out that July 7th of this year was my end of the line. And we decided to get married, and we were so on June 22nd.

Anyways, my question. Technically speaking we got married because we didn't want to be apart for 2 years, or go through the K1 process, so can this be construed as marriage for immigration benefits? Is this something I can tell the IO at the interview? or let this be one of those "Don't ask, don't tell" kind of things?

And I'm sorry if this question has been asked before and answered, I did a search but couldn't easily find something.

I greatly appreciate all your help!

-Robert

Hi

I thinks that in the way you say it, it could be considered as a non bona fide marriage. But the most important thing is if you are a really couple, and you are in love, you have to feel confident about yourselves, and start to collect all kinds of evidences and explain in a letter your history. Based on that you have a lot of chances to succeed . Always keeping in mind that your history is based in a couple that felt in love but always be well prepared to answer this question that i am almost sure that this question will show up in any moment.

Never lie and if you show a well sequenced evidences of your relationship you will be fine no matter the reason to move the wedding date.

You got married because you didn't want to be apart, not solely for immigration purposes. They just want to see that you are a real couple and are starting your lives as husband and wife. Don't feel so guilty about it :)

I was in the same situation, AND I met my hubby on eharmony too. ;)

It never came up during the interview. Our interview was less than 5 minutes and nothing got asked aside from our name, address, date of birth, parents names. The IO did not ask why we hadn't had our wedding yet either.

And I'm a speech therapist, which is a high-demand profession in this country, just like yours. I'm pretty sure it played a part in making the whole process that much smoother.
