Translating and Certifing English Marriage Certificate

Hello everyone,

My mom needs a copy of my marriage certificate in Arabic to submit it to a certain department in Egypt. I called the Egyptian embassy today to see how they can help me. And after four phone calls, I was told that I have to notarize my English marriage certificate then send it to the Department of State in the US to (stamp it?), then go to a certified translator to translate the English marriage certificate into Arabic, then send copies of both notarized/stamped original and its translation to the Egyptian Embassy to certify it....

That seems very very complicated... I wonder if anyone has gone through the same thing before. If you have, please share.

Thanks in advance!

I called a few months ago and they told me that all I have to do is send them a copy of the English marriage certificate with $25 by money-order and they will send the certified translation back within 6 to 8 weeks...

I don't know which is true anymore...

I, also, have to mention that their customer/citizen service is got to be one of the worst in the world (no exaggeration). Heavy Egyptian accents (seemed unprofessional to me), no representatives to take the call 3 times in a row, being forwarded to lines I didn't know, being interrupted, given a better treatment when I spoke in English and not in Arabic...

I am very disappointed.

It sounds like what I had to do with my divorce decree prior to the change of rules in which you no longer have to get it authenticated. It's not complicated just time consuming. The state dept. will authenticate your certified marriage certificate (make sure it's a certified copy not just a copy). They basically put an extra page on it with a seal or at least that's what they used to do. Then the Egyptian consulate/embassy will also stamp the translation. $25 is a bargain for translation. We paid $100 for two documents here but we didn't send them away, they did it while we waited. I dealt with the Egyptian consulate in Chicago and they were nice and helpful. I sent the Chicago consulate my passport for the Egyptian visitor visa stamp and I got it back fairly quickly (before I was aware you can get one at the airport). Which one did you call?

"The truth will set you free. But first, it will piss you off.

Thank you for your reply, JVTA.

I called the Huston one. The representative asked me which state I live in and then he forwarded me to a mystery line. LOL

Tomorrow I'll call the Chicago one and see if they are any different.

Can you get a friend or someone that can translate english into arabic to do it on the computer. Then you and your friend that translated need to go to FED ex or someplace that notorizes and pay about $5 for yall both to sign it in front of them. Then send that page off to Washington Dc to get Stamped. I think that would work.

We did something similar for AOS.

Hey Aya! Ok, we had a Syrian friend be our translator back home in Atlanta. She took Adams birth certificate in arabic and translated it into english. At the bottom of the page she had to write something along the lines of ... I am fluent in arabic and english and have translated this birth certificate. She then came with me and adam to Fed Ex or UPS and we both signed the paper in front of the notary there and I paid $5. Then we sent that english birth cert paper in for Adams AOS. There was no problem with it.

btw, I read somewhere back then that you couldnt be your own translator, so thats why we had our friend do it for us bcz she had to sign the bottom and we had to sign it or adam did anyways. I will find his english paper and find exactly what it was that she put on the bottom. Anyways, it worked great for us!

Was your friend a certified translator?

Was your friend a certified translator?

She was just a middle eastern friend that did it for us. This is what it said at the bottom of the page...

I, (inserted her first and last name) certifiy that I am fluent in the English and Arabic languages, and that the above/attached document is an accurate translation of the document entitled a Transcript of Birth Registration.

then right under this part she typed her name, address and phone number

then under that, she put this

Signature:

Date: and in this spot she signed and dated in front of a notory at Fed ex, then they stamped it with a notory, signed and dated it.

This is what we used for Birth Cert for AOS and had no problems at all.
