walaikum salaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

Hello there..

Congratulations on your arrival and new life. Yes, it might seem overwhelming at first but believe me it gets better once you spend afew years here and know your way around. As far as college, I think waiting for that one year would be a wise decision BUT in the meantime I would suggest joining or getting a library card and checking out some BAsic English start-up books to help you sharpen your English(no offense). Correct grammar and panctuation plus being able to speak "proper" english will eliminate alot of basic english classes that you will have to take so rather than paying to have this basic classes, I feel you should take the initiative and try to learn some of this things yourself. Alot will depend on what your husband wants to, does he want to start a family right away? does he want you to get a college degree first? does he want you to work and go to school? This are some things that you will have to sit down with your spouse and go over. I hope this helps and like I said before, things will get better as time goes. Good Luck.

Asalaam.

Salam and Happy Ramadan to you.

My husband arrived here in February and right away he started a English writing class at our local library(he was pre-tested so they could put him in the right class)which was free. This really helped him. Also he got to meet other people from different cultures with different experiences. The class also went over job skills and putting together a resume. I suggest you check with your local library for and English/ESL classes. Perhaps there could also be a TOEFL class that you will need prior to starting college.

As for a job, once he got his green card last month he applied to many places. He received a job shortly after. Not the best job but it's a first step on the ladder.

If taking formal classes full time is too expensive until you've lived there for a year, you might look at what are called continuing education classes at a junior or technical college. These are usually short-term classes for a few weeks at a time, and you can often get some sort of certificate after completing them. You can take a class as a step toward a career that interests you, or you can take a class just for fun. This would help you build a network of friends as well, and ESL classes are also good for that.

Cities often have free newspapers or web sites available which have a calendar of local activities. For example, this summer, my city has sponsored free concerts and movies in the parks. On certain days of the week or month, the museums and the zoo have free or discounted admission. There are often lots of things going on that you may not know about until you research your city. Many cities have a visitor's bureau or tourism office, which is a good place to start when you're new to a place.

Good luck!
