LA Area beaches for surfing in late Sept

Long Beach has no beach. :-)

Long Beach has a nice beach. It's also got a long strand for strolling/skating/bike riding, and great night life. What it DOESN'T have is surf! The long break wall kills the waves. The water's as calm as a lake. The water is also filthy. Most of the locals won't swim in it.

Lived there almost 10 years before moving to NorCal.

I don't care where HAL surfs, I just want to be ready with my telephoto lens. He's already tantalised me with promises of swim meet pics; I am taking matters into my own hands this time.

I may be in LA (Anaheim more exactly) for a conference next month. Since its a short time I'd like the help of the LA area crowd for local suggestions for a surf spot I can get to from Anaheim (2 hour drive max) where I don't have to fight with surf nazis for a claim to the waves. I might be OK with sponging (boogie boarding) the waves. Either board or sponge, I'd need to rent gear.

County Line, just north of Leo Carrillo is mellow, street parking and easy walk down from the highway. Just head west on PCH until you pass the Ventura County line. Once you pass the Fire Station on the right, and the swim club on the right, you can see the open shore on the right.

Have fun, and you might see my old geezer (younger) brother riding his boogie board out there in the morning before work.

They were featuring him in a surf magazine, until they found out how old he was. They left the long shot in the article, and just happened not to mention his age.

Hey, no shortage of love for Long Beach from this gal. Two of my favorite watering holes are there:

Curley's for all your blue-collar boozing needs. The oil thingamabobs in the parking lot lend a certain je ne sais quoi to the experience:

The Pike for all your post-punk libation and prandial needs. Owned and operated by the Social D dude, so you know there is always kick-#### music in the air. My favorite SoCal bar!

I thought you were trying to steer him to the Salton Sea! I hear it gets double overhead on a good day out there, if you can paddle out through the dead fish and birds.

County Line is fun on a sponge. Probably too far afield from Anaheim, esp. on a Friday (traffic), but it does have its charms, including Neptune's Net right across PCH. It's lost some of its grit -- the dirtbag bikers have been mostly replaced with foppish SoCal douchebags on rice rockets -- but it's still an OK scene at off hours (non weekend).

If you go to Seal Beach, I know of a place with FREE PARKING with VJ'ers who run a great business on Pacific Coast Highway.

I'll be working on maybe bringing the Mrs along... then maybe she'll let me purchase the whole necessary sponger kit. Then I wouldn't have to ask maven for some telephoto pics of me shredding up some wave.
