I believe Doheny Beach in San Clemente though is one of the dirtiest beaches in terms of the water. Laguna Beach is little closer to Anaheim.

I'll take a little dirtier water for a better break.

But HAL9000 appears to be in a parallel universe, so even if you were pulled up next to him at a stop light, you would still be a million light years apart.

Bolsa Chica (conditions depending) would get my vote. Lots of room to spread out there.

No sponging allowed at Malibu, fierce pecking order if you decide to surf, and the water quality is nasty.

Long Beach has no beach. :-)

El Porto will break your neck, smells like farts (the sewage treatment plant is just up the hill), and airplanes fly overhead from LAX.

San Onofre is very fun, laid back, almost always something to surf there. Great Whites hang out near the nuclear plant area.

San Clemente has the hottest chicks in SoCal. FWIW.

San Clemente > Newport Beach. Better food and better breaks :P

This is the kind of discussion I want to read here!

Any chance of glowing in the dark that night?

Not a surfer, but the mere thought that the esteemed HAL 9000 will be within driving distance has made me feel all smooshy inside.

I will try to announce the winning beach before I gooooooooooooooo :D

Do I sense that those swim meet pics might turn into surf pics? If so, I'll definitely need you to bring a telephoto lens for some cool closeups for me.

Oooooh, surf pics even better, especially if I get to be the photographer. I'll try not to steam up the lens.luv.gif

LOLz... seriously... I'd be happy to have my pics done surfing. Even on a sponge!

LoL, there is a reason I put San Clemente first on that list

El Porto is near a sewage plant and LAX, but the break off the jetty is great, both for surfing and spongers. FWIW, the treated sewage spews miles off the coast, so it's not like you're surfing in sh!t, and it does not smell like farts, anymore.

I think Bolsa Chica, or County Line are your best bets though. I forgot how territorial the locals are, but mostly, they just hate journalists there, not so much outsiders. Palos Verdes however..... they are infamous for throwing rocks at people hicking down the bluff to the beach. I'd stay away.

I fly in to SNA 29 Sept...

Now all I need is for the surf to cooperate... likely that Friday morning!

I think I'll decide what specific beach in OC a few days before... but I'm still open to more suggestions and votes.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Yeah I don't rule out the idea of hanging out with sane VJers either!

I live less than 1 hr. from Anaheim in Riverside (92504). Our friends who we visit frequently live in Seal Beach - about 20 min. from Anaheim. Send me a PM and we'll be glad to visit w/another Colombia Clubber!

Huntington is very close to Anaheim. Don't complicate things, and just have fun.

Hey HAL, you'll be happy to know we are having our first real day of summer-like weather at the beach today. Lots of scantily-clad males out on bikes, skateboards, and on foot today. B-)

NOTE: SoCal males seem to have an unfortunate predilection for shaving their chests. DO NOT DO THIS. You'll need your fur to keep you warm in the still-chilly water. :D

And don't forget your fleece Speedo. The unusually cold currents have triggered an unusual amount of krill activity, which has led a bunch of blue whales to take up residence right off of Palos Verdes.
