LA Area beaches for surfing in late Sept

I may be in LA (Anaheim more exactly) for a conference next month. Since its a short time I'd like the help of the LA area crowd for local suggestions for a surf spot I can get to from Anaheim (2 hour drive max) where I don't have to fight with surf nazis for a claim to the waves. I might be OK with sponging (boogie boarding) the waves. Either board or sponge, I'd need to rent gear.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

From Anaheim I see Long Beach, Huntington Beach, Newport beach... and Laguan Nigel is a little down the coast so in case anyone has any questions for CSC I can drop by...

I never surfed when I lived in LA but my friend always went to this place in Malibu. I totally forget the name of the park that we parked at. Ummm...turn left into there if you're going north on the pch

ps. I will find out the name of the place

All the good spots are gonna have surf nazi's. If you're gonna be in Anaheim, the shortest and closest will probably be San Clemente, a little further up is Bolsa Chica, and a bit further up north is County Line. If you'er going to go up to Los Angeles, ther is El Porto or Point Dume which are great spots. I would stay away from Palos Verdes Cove, they are VERY VERY territorial. If you're into long boarding, Malibu is the best spot, but it's a bit of a drive.

I don't know much about the surfing in Los Angeles, but if you're willing to go one county over to Ventura, we have some excellent surfing. That might be stretching your two-hour drive limit though.

If you're going to be in Anaheim, I think it'd be worth your while to drive down to Laguna Beach. There's some nice little niche areas where people boogey board with a few surfers, so you should be fine. I can send a map of the location I'm talking about. :) I wish we were still out there and then we'd have you over for dinner.

So if I change my name to Johnny Utah should be OK?

Thanks for the pointers. I just saw the surf report for Bolsa Chica and Huntington... not bad. El Porto is around Manhattan beach right?

Right now I see myself surviving on a sponge but I don't rule out the drive to Malibu either. Why I'm drawn to Long Beach is beyond me. Something about riding a wave for more than 30 seconds perhaps?

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Yeah I don't rule out the idea of hanging out with sane VJers either! Too bad you're not around! :(

Even better would have been a VJ surf field trip.

Thank you all for your ideas. I'll check back later since its time to go.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

I don't surf, but the people I hand about with go on about the Wedge, Newport Beach. Nice area anyway, great eats in Newport Beach by the pier.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

San Clemente > Newport Beach. Better food and better breaks :P

I believe Doheny Beach in San Clemente though is one of the dirtiest beaches in terms of the water. Laguna Beach is little closer to Anaheim.
