A city cab driver is in the hospital after being stabbed by a passenger who allegedly asked if he was Muslim, police tell NY1.

Investigators with the New York City Police Department say it all began Monday night when a 21-year-old man hailed a cab at 24th Street and Second Avenue in Manhattan.

Police say the passenger asked the driver, "Are you Muslim?" When the driver said yes the passenger pulled a knife and slashed him in the throat, arm and lip.

The 43-year-old driver was able to lock the passenger in the back of the cab and call 911.

Both the driver and the passenger were taken to Bellevue Hospital.

The New York Police Department has confirmed to TPM that a cab driver in Manhttan was allegedly stabbed by a passenger who asked if the cabbie was Muslim, and says the incident is being treated as a hate crime. The suspect has been charged with attempted murder and other crimes.

According to Detective Marc Nell, at 6:12 pm last night, the driver picked up Michael Enright, 21, of Brewster, NY, at the intersection of 24th Street and 2nd Avenue in Manhattan. The cab proceeded to drive north, and Enright asked the driver, who Nell identified as a 43-year-old Asian male, if he was Muslim. After the driver responded that he was, Enright allegedly stabbed him repeatedly with a Leatherman tool, according to police.

"[Enright] stabbed the driver in the throat, right arm, left forearm, right thumb and upper lip," Nell said.

According to police, the driver called 911, and stopped the cab on 3rd Avenue between 40th and 41st streets, managing to lock Enright inside until police arrived.

Nell told TPM that the cab driver is in stable condition, and that Enright has been charged with "attempted murder two as a hate crime, assault with a weapon as a hate crime, aggravated harassment second degree because of race and religion, and criminal possession of a weapon."

Nell could not confirm that Enright had admitted to asking the driver if he was Muslim.

i cant find the code for attempted murder two, but i am pretty sure murder two is if you kill someone not your intended victim and murder one is if you kill your primary target. three would be the catch all for everyone else.

so attempted murder would be (IMHO) if he almost killed soemone in his attempt to kill his primary target.

GRAMERCY — A 21 year-old man is facing hate crime and attempted murder charges for allegedly stabbing a taxi driver after asking him if he was Muslim on Tuesday evening, according to the NYPD.

Michael Enright, from Brewster, NY, hailed a cab at 6:14 p.m. at East 24th Street and Second Avenue and, while traveling Northbound, asked the taxi driver named Ahmed H. Sharif, “Are you Muslim?” authorities said.

Sharif, a 43 year-old Southeast Asian man who lives in Queens, replied to Enright that he was in fact Muslim, police said.

Enright yelled "al salaam a'alaykum," the Arabic greeting meaning "peace upon you," at Sharif and then said, "Consider this a checkpoint," according to the New York Taxi Workers Alliance.

He then pulled out a Leatherman pocketknife tool and stabbed Sharif from the backseat at least five times: in the throat, the upper lip, the left forearm, the right arm, and the hand.

Sharif was able to pull over at East 40th Street and Third Avenue, lock Enright in the backseat, and jump out of the car to call 911, police said.

Both men were taken to Bellevue Hospital — the driver for his injuries and Enright for a psychiatric evaluation, police said.

"I feel very sad. I have been here more than 25 years. I have been driving a taxi more than 15 years. All my four kids were born here. I never feel this hopeless and insecure before," Sharif said in a statement released by the Taxi Workers Alliance.

"Right now, the public sentiment is very serious [because of the Ground Zero Mosque debate]. All drivers should be more careful."

Taxi and Limousine Commission spokesman Allan Fromberg told DNAinfo that the agency had no comment citing the ongoing investigation.

Enright is facing charges of assault and attempted murder as a hate crime, criminal possession of a weapon, and aggravated harassment for race or religion.

This sounds similar to "Blood Libel" which were cases where Jews were

often imprisoned, beaten & killed because Christians or Muslims thought

Jews were using the blood of their children in their religious rituals.

I'm not comparing the ritualistic aspects but only the fact that there was an

improper & violent attack based on the victim's religion because of which

the attacker thought there was reason enough to lash out.

From sectarian paranoia resulting from a case of a missing child (in the case

of blood libel), we now have just the thought or mention of a "demonized" faith

as a presumed excuse for violent action. Neither one makes any sense.

Whatever sides the victim & attacker are on, it's a mean nasty business

and has no place in this country or any other.
