A gamer has filed a lawsuit against publisher NCSoft, claiming that he is unable to function because of his Lineage II addiction.

Craig Smallwood says he has played a total of 20,000 hours of Lineage II over a period of five years, from 2004 to 2009. Smallwood believes his addiction has affected his quality of life and alleges in the suit that he is "unable to function independently in usual daily activities such as getting up, getting dressed, bathing or communicating with family and friends."

Smallwood is citing negligence in his claim for an unspecified amount of damages and says in the suit, according to Wired, that NCSoft should have issued a warning with the game, cautioning users about its addictive nature.

Wired reports that U.S. District Judge Alan Kay refused to dismiss parts of Smallwood’s complaint this month.

"In light of plaintiff’s allegations, the court finds that plaintiff has stated a claim for both negligence and gross negligence," the suit cites Kay as saying.

Another frivolous lawsuit. Lovely. When are people going to take responsibility for their own actions? I smoke, yet I do not blame the tobacco companies for it. They provide a (legal) product that I deliberately and knowingly enjoy. Any consequences are my own fault, including the difficulty I have in quitting because I just enjoy it so darned much.

Cripes, I just did the math. There are 43,800 hours in 5 years. He spent basically half of his time playing this game. However, that would be about 12 hours per day - so, given that he would sleep about 8, what did he do with the other 4? Obviously not shower. unsure.gif

Well, the other BS part about it too, is he can't prove that he was playing all that time.

While the games track all the time that you're 'in-game,' they don't track how much you actually play. So you can leave it idle and the time will still accumulate.

For instance I probably have like 2,000 hours total on Guild Wars (another NCSoft game) over the past 5 years... I only actually 'played' maybe 1,000 of those hours.. the rest were just sitting idle in-game overnight or leaving for a bit.

Hey ladies, he's single!!

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

i was telling some guys at work about this - we then started talking about the mcdonald's hot coffee court case. my solution - at the drive thru, there is an iq test you have to take before placing your order. if you flunk it, you get cold coffee.
