Ah, so, since most of us have been to the ME/NA, I guess we know that it's common to not use toilet paper post bathroom use and instead use water.

Has anyone purchased a bidet system for their home here? Care to give a review?

Thanks.

NO.....haven't purchased or plan to purchase/install one either. :P He's adjusting pretty well here all in all......... :P:P

His family were pretty familiar with Western toilet habits because of other family members having friends in the States.

LOL! I forgot to tell you to pack your own toilet paper when you head to Cairo

It was quite a shock the first time I went too. There is a little metal spigot in the toilet, and you turn a handle and water sprays. I'm definately a bad shot with it and usually end up getting my jeans or skirt in a few places.

Right now we use a watering can + toiletpaper here, but I'm thinking of bday presents for my husband and this is one possibility. Watch him come and read this thread and ruin the suprise. He never liked suprises anyways.

When I was younger and my family lived in France my brother and I discovered a bidet then I washed his hair in it cause that's what we thought it was for. When my parents found out they laughed for a long time.

Oops!

It's mostly related to being Muslim. You must be clean to pray (stem to stern) and when you pray 5 times a day, it makes it tough to get grubby!

Bidets are found all over France and Europe... I can't say I know the history of them but I wonder where/how they originated. Not really.

I found this :

bidet – this familiar word comes from the French for a small horse or pony; that is, one easily straddled

You can buy toidy paper in Egypt, but don't expect it to be provided in the average home or away from the touristy areas.

Oh and then there is the "hole in the floor". I got to meet one of those in the Ramses train station. Mohammed laughed himself to tears. I shrugged and said it's no different then when you're out in the woods and have to go. Get over it. Pfft

Oh, and I didn't mean to imply that the bidet appeared in the middle east due to religion. It was adopted and now every muslim home has one because water is the method recommended to cleanse the body for prayer and "when necessary".
