Alright guys...I just got back from the SSN office to change my name. I gave my documents/application and the guy (after consulting with a coworker for 5 minutes) told me I should come back to change my name on my SSN card when I have my Green Card. Now note that I am a different situation then most K1's as I already had a Social Security Card when I was working on a TN Visa (last year). Therefore my SSN card says "Valid for work only with DHS Authorisation" across the top. He told me because I will eventually need to have this taken off my card too (when I get my green card) that its better for me to change my name on my SSN card once I have the green card done. This way, there will be one change instead of two changes (and you're only allowed to have 10 total changes in a lifetime on your SSN card).

I then asked him won't applying for AOS in my married name cause a problem between USCIS and SSA (Social Security Administration)? He said no its actually better procedure to have my name updated with USCIS first...he said out of state people who have a problem with their card, they send to USCIS first to change their name THEN back to SSA to change their card. Hope this is correct as I'll be sending in my AOS on Monday!

See that's so weird because I didn't run into any problems when I got my card at firt, and when I gt te name change. I mean, the person at the desk didn't even ask me any questions, just like they knew exactly what they were doing... I hope I don't run any trouble in the near future... :S

Just in case...driver's license stuff is so different state to state. Well at least California seems to be somewhat!

SSN card

Current MI DL

Marriage Cert

Utility bill

Bank statement

Passport

She applied for it in her married name initially but got shot down since SSN didn't match, I don't anticipate any issues this time.

Ah, ok! Well, good luck! I'm a little worried because I have no proof of residency except for the slip that my SSN card came in. Hopefully that'll do...

I'll keep you posted, and let us know how it went too!

In MI you can prove residency with docs in a family member's name if you can prove the relationship.

So the bills/statements were/are in my name and the marriage cert is proof of relationship. Worked fine the first time.

Maybe your state has a similar clause?

Ah... Didn't think about that! I'll make sure I bring some of his bills with me then! Thanks for the tip! This is the second time you've saved the day nickbits!

Just wanted to say Happy Thanksgiving everyone. We went and got our marriage certificate on Saturday. The lady wrote down that I had a U.S. passport and put my visa number beside it. I hope that isnt a problem. funny thing is when we were sitting waiting for the woman to be done typing up everything, there was a guy there that was asking about how to get his canadian citizenship. I was wearing my red t-shirt with CANADA across the front. What a small world lol

Life is like a roller coaster. Hold on tight and enjoy the ride!
