Yeah, I don't know yet what I'll do... I guess I don't mind renewing my green card, but at the same time, how easy would it be to just go ahead and have both citizenship, you know? Saves a lot of money too...

I have a bunch of questions in my head about the whole process, and when I have time, maybe this weekend or next week, I'm thinking of posting them on here, and see what the deal is...

But you guys are sure that we can keep our Canadian citizenship when we apply and get our US citizenship?

I'm not 100% sure, but It sounds as if you can keep your Canadian Citizenship based on what other VJ members have posted about this subject. It looks as if a few of them have both there American and Canadian Passports. I havn't found anything in goverment sites that state this yet, I havn't looked, but it must be true if others have done it already.

I did some homework for you about this question that you can take a look at from the VJ forums :P

Hey!

We got a grey Mazda 3. Love it!

Yeah I'm learning towards citizenship...as far as I've seen we are able to keep multiple citizenships...I know a few Canadians who have both.

Here's a quote from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_nationality_law

Dual citizenship

Physicist Albert Einstein receiving his certificate of American citizenship from Judge Phillip Forman in 1940. He also retained his Swiss citizenship.[23]

Based on the U.S. Department of State regulation on dual citizenship (7 FAM 1162), the Supreme Court of the United States has stated that dual citizenship is a "status long recognized in the law" and that "a person may have and exercise rights of nationality in two countries and be subject to the responsibilities of both. The mere fact he asserts the rights of one citizenship does not without more mean that he renounces the other," (Kawakita v. U.S., 343 U.S. 717) (1952). In Schneider v. Rusk 377 U.S. 163 (1964), the US Supreme Court ruled that a naturalized U.S. citizen has the right to return to his native country and to resume his former citizenship, and also to remain a U.S. citizen even if he never returns to the United States.

The Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) neither defines dual citizenship nor takes a position for it or against it. There has been no prohibition against dual citizenship, but some provisions of the INA and earlier U.S. nationality laws were designed to reduce situations in which dual citizenship exists. Although naturalizing citizens are required to undertake an oath renouncing previous allegiances, the oath has never been enforced to require the actual termination of original citizenship.[24]

Although the U.S. Government does not endorse dual citizenship as a matter of policy, it recognizes the existence of dual citizenship and completely tolerates the maintenance of multiple citizenship by U.S. citizens. In the past, claims of other countries on dual-national U.S. citizens sometimes placed them in situations where their obligations to one country were in conflict with the laws of the other. However, as fewer countries require military service and most base other obligations, such as the payment of taxes, on residence and not citizenship, these conflicts have become less frequent. As a result, there has been a dramatic increase in recent years in the number of people who maintain U.S. citizenship in other countries.

One circumstance where dual citizenship may run counter to expectations of government agencies is in matters of security clearance. Any person granted a Yankee White vetting must be absolutely free of foreign influence, and for other security clearances one of the grounds that may result in a rejected application is an actual or potential conflict of national allegiances.

I've heard that too... I'll make sure I confirm that before I make a decision, but I guess when we remove our conditions, we'll be issued a 10-years green card, so that's a lot of time to think about it and research it... The testing part makes me nervous though, I mean, what happens if you fail the test???

Anyways, I hope everyone is settling in well in the US! I'm doing a lot better, I'm actually able to say that I'm happy now! There's just a lot of family issues back home, and I wish I was there to help, listen and council, but it is what it is... My mom told me on the phone this evening that she missed me and missed talking to me when she wants to... It made me sad, I hate being this far from her, you know?

But eh, apart from that, things are way better now!!!

I am glad you are happy now. I know how you feel talking to people back home and feeling sad. It breaks my heart when my nieces cry because they miss me and my son. It's hard and I hope over time it will get easier.

I just came back from visiting Canada. Boarder went great. Didn't even have to show them my marriage certificate to show the why my passport and green card have different names. The guard seemed to be more interested in my sister and what she was doing after dropping me and Alex at the airport. Didn't get called into secondary either. The easiest boarder crossing I have had yet.

Life is like a roller coaster. Hold on tight and enjoy the ride!

Glad to see that everyone is all good after the crazy weather we have been having lately. Here in Texas we are now battling forest fires, luckidly none are in our county, but alot of people have already lost their homes. It's so sad...We are finally getting a cold front though, if you want to call 85-90's degrees a cool front..lol.. It sure does feel good though..now we just need some more rain to help put out the fires!!!

Can't believe tomorrow is going to be a year since I moved here, How time flys!!

Hope all is well :)

Hi everyone!!!

Alaba, so glad you're safe!!! I was worried when I saw the pictures from the Caribbean's! Have a safe trip back and enjoy the very plain and safe Canadian weather, !

And I was thinking about you too J&J! Is your area OK? We saw all the fires this week down there, it's pretty crazy!!! How is the air quality? Does it smell like smoke where you are? Thank you for the wishes! I do remember your POEing on the same day! Time flies by, it's insane!!!

Well, Chris and I were pre-appproved for our first house! We're looking right now, and our goal is to move in by March 2012! Should leave us plenty of time to find the perfect house for us! It's so exciting!!! I haven't even moved yet, and I'm thinking of all the things we'll have to get at Ikea

Well, hope all is well for everyone, take care and stay in touch!

Howdy, our area is safe and sound, alot of the fires are contained now. There was a few days in the early mornings that the smoke was lingering in the air, but it disappeared by the afternoons. We are sapost to get some rain today, I sure hope it happens!!

Congrats on the pre-approval on ya'lls first house, very exciting. Hope you both find your dream house fast and without troubles :) Did you guys do anything for your first anniversary?

Hope all is well!!!
