Stress? What's that?

My fiance took one look at my face when he came home from work and said, 'oh no, here we go again.' The AOS is going to take longer to prepare than I had anticipated. Oh well, just another obstacle to cross. I want to cross it with you guys! YAY August interviewees!

When we get our Permanent Residency we can REALLY celebrate!!

I'm coming up to my 2 week anniversary of POE and have been enjoying this time with my fiance and planning our civil ceremony (this Friday!!)

Last week we applied for our marriage license and scheduled our ceremony. I'm starting to think about applying for my SSN. I think this is the first step. Without it, depending on the state, you can't get your driver's license or open up a bank account.

The only thing is, I have to apply for it in my maiden name first (because you have to apply with at least 60 days left on your I-94) , and then go into the office once I have my marriage certificate and apply for a name-change. Craziness. Anyway, it's different with every state, so don't fret.

I've also started volunteering. It's a great way to give back to the community, keep busy and make new friends. On my days off, I've been experimenting with new recipes. It can be hard not working, but at the same time, it's nice to have this opportunity to settle and establish roots.

Good luck to you all with your POE and welcome home!

AOS

POE @ Toronto Pearson - 08/12/10

Civil Ceremony - 08/27/10

Applied for SSN in married name - 09/06/10 (I was told it will take 4 weeks to get the background check cleared and an additional 2 weeks to receive my card)

AOS/EAD/AP sent with FedEx - 09/25/10

E-Notice From Chicago - 10/05/10

I-797C, NOA1 Received - 10/08/10

SSN card received (FINALLY!)- 10/23/10

Biometrics appointment - 10/28/10

EAD Approved - 11/19/10 (USCIS Website Notice)

AP Approved & Received - 11/22/10

EAD Received- 11/23/10

Interview - 02/07/11 APPROVED!

I am now a U.S. Permanent Resident!!

Ok, so now I'm stressing!!!

We're getting married on the 9th of September, and my I-94 expires on November 17th... That leaves me 68 days on my I-94 if I want to apply for my SSN under my married name... What should I do? I mean, it all depends also on if I get the marriage certificate right away, doesn't it?

Should I just go ahead and get it? I wanted to wait so that I could fill everything under that name, SSN, driver's license, AOS... How long for a name change anyways?

What do you guys think?

(ok ok, not stressing, it'll be ok!) :bonk:

Alright, well made a bunch of phone calls, and here's the deal:

- Gotta apply for your SSN asap (10 days after your POE for the system to be updated)

- You need the marriage certificate to change your name to your married name (duh)

- In Virginia, it takes 3 weeks to get the mariage certificate back

- Then you can apply for a name change...

:bonk:

Gosh, this is complicated... I thought i'd be able to file the AOS relatively soon after we got married, but looks like it'll be in mid-October at the latest... :bonk:

You really dont have to worry

You will have the marriage certificate well before November, heck, probably before October, you might only have had a problem if you were going for SSN within 2 weeks of the I-94 expiry

HHmm so I already have a SSN from working in US last year. So I guess all I do is do the name change bit when I have the marriage certificate... :innocent:

I'm actually more wondering if its going to complicate anything... :bonk:
