I like him too. But would he win given that campaigns are waged on TV? He's huge, you know.

In any primary, any republican candidate would run to the right of him and try to discredit him as not being a "real conservative". He is fiscally conservative, yet socially moderate, and not complete letch and moron like Giuliani.

Agreed, if he ran in a GOP primary that's what his opponents would try to do. If he decides to not take the bait and does not change all his positions (like Guiliani did) then I'd see him as an attractive candidate against any Democratic nominee.

But can be not take the bait and still win? Who knows. I choose to believe it's still possible.

In a presidential primary, I don't think he could resist taking the bait. With that much media attention, and advertisements, you really can't avoid it. To be honest, with his political views and intelligence, had the republicans ran him in 08 instead of McCain, Obama would not have won. However, in today's extremist political climate, the teabaggers will eat him up, or make him conform.

A colleague who is a Republican bigshot in a small Jersey shore town tells me there are rumors that Christie is thinking of a Presidential run in 2012 with the Democratic mayor of Newark (Cory Booker) on his team. Just throwing it out there. It's hearsay.

That smacks of a gimmick run to me. Do you think Christie has the gravitas to pull it off?

ETA: I get the feeling that the GOP are holding back their big guns til 2016, making the field much more open in 2012.

So do you think that being borderline morbidly obese would preclude him from actually winning?

It might. Of course, we recently elected a black man whos opponents said he might be muslim and/or kenyan and/or homosexual and/or communist so who knows. If those barriers can be broken, perhaps anti-fat obese can be broken too.

So was Taft. They had to remove all the interior doors in the Whitehouse residence, and install a custom made bathtub to allow for his "bulk".

Is our culture more or less biased against fat people today than it was then?
