As soon as your wife gets her CR-1 visa, she can start working in the USA. There's no paperwork to fill out for her to work.

Nope, with a CR-1 visa, she's automatically eligible to work in the USA. The stamp in her passport will act as the visa as well as a temporary green card so she can work. A few weeks after POE, she'll get the green card in the mail. If you check the box off on the DS-230 for an SSN to be assigned to her, she'll get that in the mail in a few weeks as well. If you don't check that box off, you can just visit a local SSN office and she can sign up for one.

I originally thought that but then I thought that you needed a SS number to work. So if hired how would that work without GC and SS? The visa somehow overrides those? Is it possible to get a Drivers license without SS?

The stamp in the visa acts as a temporary green card until you get the physical card in the mail. I don't know much about US employers and SSNs, so perhaps the stamp in the passport will be good enough for them as proof you can work until you get the SSN in the mail.

I believe you have to wait till after you get the SSN before you get a driver's license. I'm not sure about driver's license from France, but a Canadian driver's license is sufficient to drive with until you get your SSN to obtain a US driver's license.

Remember, an SSN should be assigned to you within 3 weeks of POE (if you checked the box off on the DS-230). If you haven't gotten it in the mail after 3 weeks, you can go to a local SSN office and get it done there.

Getting the green card can vary from getting it within a few weeks to a month or more. But the stamp in your passport can always act as a temporary green card up to a year long if I remember correctly, but by then you should definitely have the physical green card.

Thanks Saylin. For me the actual GC doesn't really matter as much as the SSN and DL's and legal right to work. The GC is great for proving legal residence but I feel like after a DL is obtained that would become the main source of ID and make the GC obsolete (as everyday use lol)

Well, don't worry about legally being able to work. You can right away with the stamp in your passport.

And yeah, a DL would be a very handy piece of ID to prove residency. But remember, the GC won't be obsolete if you have to travel as it's your way back into the USA. :P

SIF!!! Finally done with USCIS and NVC. Finally done with papers!!! Now, to rock the interview!!! Wooooosh!

Hey sarah et luc, maybe you got SIF too. We started NVC almost the same time and we sent the papers exactly on the day, I believe.

How many days have passed? I know in our case that it took a while to show up in the payment portal on our IV packet fee.
