And anybody married to a Filipina should know that Philippine English is quite different from Midwestern English.

Nice list you got there Steven, back in the day we just called it bad English. My wife is a Filipina and her English is proper. She didnt go to school to learn some sort of special Filipina version of it, she paid attention in class and took in what the teacher was teaching.

Those arrogant Brits still think the American English you call 'good' English is 'bad' English.

Language evolves.

simpson - I think they're taking it seriously because they need to know ####### they're saying (maybe they understand but they need someone credible to "translate" it for other people to understand) so it'll be usable in court or to obtain a warrant or something. if the judge doesn't understand it, or the people (jury?) who have to hear the wiretaps in court don't understand it, how the hell do you expect them to find someone guilty?

I had no problem with the story itself. I entered the thread responding to something AJ said about Ebonics.

Actually, yes. That language form has been studied and researched quite a bit.

Point being is that when Jeff Foxworthy talks about the redneck dictionary it for comical reasons but Ebonics is being taken seriously by way to many people.

Yes American English is different and probably as result to a abusive nature to the language. Why encourage this bad behavior? Do we do this with math or any other subject for that matter?

At this point, we're just repeating ourselves. So I'll stop.

No we didnt, it was never addressed. Both are ridiculous but by many only one is considered ridiculous.

You're comparing language to math? Now I'm convinced you're not serious. I'm done.

Point being is there not teaching Ebonics in classroom, focus AJ.

I thought Sarah endorsed making up new words? She even suggested doing so was Shakespearean - which it is if done for a purpose ;)

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Gary and Simpson, nice Red Herrings and attempts to derail this thread. Get back on topic, or leave the thread.

Your crocodile tears notwithstanding, this story shouldn't generate the self-righteous indignation that you two have shown. Law enforcement are having trouble disciphering the language used in wire taps in preparation for either a trial, or an arrest, so they are asking for help from linguistics experts. It really is that simple, your attemtps to characterize and demonize ebonics shows your own enmity

What are you talking about Rob. I have no problem with the story. I got into this responding to something AJ said.

I'm not a fan of Sarah.

Would you encourage our black youth to use Ebonics?

Linguists are not teaching Ebonics, they study that and all the other variations - learning about these things is to further the understanding of the evolution of language, and it has practical applications as well, hence when the need arises for someone to translate the vernacular accurately there are people who have the ability to do so - which helps when catching criminals. Who thought the liberal arts were for pansies?

Vernacular is not something one can or does 'encourage'.

Not the point. I was addressing how one is being taken as a serious dialect and the other is being laughed off. They should both be laughed off.

Vernacular is not something one can or does 'encourage'.

If in our schools we can get kids to see how using the language improperly make them look stupid then we might just end the spread of things like Ebonics.
