Actually, the class was offered by the Linguistics department and was more than just black english. The purpose was to show us how linguists derive rules for languages through observation.

More than just studying Ebonics, well thats a little better. Does this class address other bad English like spanglish?

The dialect is native to this continent as in it originated here. It's as American as jazz music.

Yes and should be offered in school. Public school. We should PAY for it. It is racist not to.

It addressed another dialect of English common in Asia. I forget which one.

I guess my issue is that I dont think Ebonics should be taken seriously. Considering all the bad English out there why are we taking this one seriously. Is it just a result of the white guilt nonsense.

Gary and Simpson, nice Red Herrings and attempts to derail this thread. Get back on topic, or leave the thread.

Your crocodile tears notwithstanding, this story shouldn't generate the self-righteous indignation that you two have shown. Law enforcement are having trouble disciphering the language used in wire taps in preparation for either a trial, or an arrest, so they are asking for help from linguistics experts. It really is that simple, your attemtps to characterize and demonize ebonics shows your own enmity

simpson - I think they're taking it seriously because they need to know ####### they're saying (maybe they understand but they need someone credible to "translate" it for other people to understand) so it'll be usable in court or to obtain a warrant or something. if the judge doesn't understand it, or the people (jury?) who have to hear the wiretaps in court don't understand it, how the hell do you expect them to find someone guilty?

Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.
