Hi I am posting here to get some info for legal aid lawyer here in Chicago. I have little money and lost my old job (I resigned) so that's the only service I could afford right now. My husband said it is OK for me to file a divorce. I have to do it soon because my green card expires less than 6 months from now. Thank you.

If the divorce is uncontested then you might not need a lawyer. Go to the Clerk of the Circuit Court where you would file for divorce and ask them if they have a self-file uncontested divorce package.

For example in McHenry County (Illinois) where we live if you follow this link, the first 4 documents "Simplified Divorce" will get you divorced without the need for a lawyer!

Hi,

Thanks for the response I decided to hire an attorney instead. Really appreciate the info though...

may I offer one bit of advice?

if the phils person files the divorce, then is impossible to get the annullment papers done in the Phils.

If USC person files the divorce, with Phils person listed as respondent, then is possible to get the annulment papers done in the Phils.

why is the annulment in Phils important? If you were to marry again, and want the marriage REGISTERED in the Phils, well, you'd have to be 'divorced properly' in the USA, so that this marriage could be listed properly in the Phils as 'annulled'.

Ask around a bit about this, get some more input.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
