Fifty-nine percent of the endangered species recovery plans issued by the U.S. government between 2005 and 2008 mention climate change as one of the major threats facing the species, according to a study published in Conservation Biology. The study, which examined 1,209 species recovery plans published between 1975 and 2008, was authored by Tony Povilitis, president of Life Net Nature, and Kierán Suckling, executive director of the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD).

The mention of climate change in these species recovery plans is a fairly recent occurrence. Of the 87 recovery plans issued between 2001 and 2004, only 16 mentioned climate change as an extinction threat. That rose to 73 out of 123 plans issued from 2005 to 2008.

Despite federally employed scientists identifying climate change as a factor in possible species extinctions, the government itself hasn't come up with any plan to protect these species by combating climate change. "Scientific teams have moved swiftly to incorporate global warming into these recovery plans, but good science isn't enough," Suckling said in a prepared statement. "We need good policy. Without it, scientific teams are forced to create their own policies on the fly, species by species, every time they write a recovery plan."

The study was actually published in April, but the CBD is just publicizing it now after spending a few months dealing with the repercussions of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

At what point will we be put on the endangered species list?

We already are. The earth will be here long after we are gone. The planet has been around for over 4 billion years and has survived much worse than mankind. Man will be extinct as we know him today, but the earth will still exist.

you are right on the money dude. as more and more people populate earth, just a little bump to the food supply could cause massive starvation. it won't take much to put a major dent in mankind in the years to come.

Life..... Nobody gets out alive.

Unless we find a way to colonize other planets... for all our "conservation" efforts, a single meteor can wipe out all life on earth.

So, we should just live it up then? Don't worry about tomorrow?

well figuring how pretty screwed we are come 2012/2013 when the next batch of solar storms shoots a solar flare our way.... I would probably go ahead and live it up. While the solar flare itself isn't the 'worst' of things that could happen, the fact that it'd knock the power grid offline would be a very bad thing..... mass chaos!!

ZOMG, the congruency in this argument is powerful. [/sarcasm]

Dudes, seriously... before we try to discredit one thing with something else, at least have the right comparisons...

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

well, it is pretty fair in all honestly. You can't be 'concerned about the future' in one instance and stand by and ignore the other.... Personally I'd rather us all fry than spend a life in slavery to the government.

Speak for yourself... including your hysterical interpretation of being a slave to the big bad guvamint. Lets keep things in context in this thread- unless science is too much for ya. :P
