Hey guys!

I have been in the states for almost two months now! And loving every minute of it

We got married 2 days ago and couldn't be happier to finally be where we wanted to be a year and a half ago.

But anywho I have a question....

How do I go about legally changing my name?

I have not gotten my SSN yet do I get that first and tell them to put my new last name on it?

Where do I go to change my name?

Any info guys would be greatly appreciated!! :)

Its already changed? as soon as you get married its changed.. all you do is bring your marriage certificate with you and request your documents in your married name.

Your I-129f was approved in 5 days from your NOA1 date.

Your interview took 67 days from your I-129F NOA1 date.

AOS was approved in 2 months and 8 days without interview.

ROC was approved in 3 months and 2 days without interview.

Oh ok I was told that I had to do paperwork in order to legally change my last name.

But that makes it easier on me. I will make sure to bring everything with me to the SSN office

Thanks guys :)

To change your BIRTH NAME yes. Not to your married name.

You're basically just assuming his name. A marriage license is legal prof of that.

If you want your GC to be in your married name, make sure you fill out your AOS documents in your married name as well.

And if you want an SSN before you receive your EAD or GC, you really need to go ASAP. They won't issue you a card unless you have at least 2 weeks of validity on your I-94, if you weren't already aware of that.

And most importantly, Congrats on the marriage!! :)

I was wondering about this too. I had it in my mind there was this magical government office you had to go to to change your name:) Wait a minute what if you're dropping your previous last name? Do you need to go to an office then?

No. The way I see it, is that the U.S. basically has no record of you anyways, in either name, so you're not changing anything since there's nothing to change. You're establishing yourself fresh under your husband's last name. Getting the SSN and applying for the AOS in the married name is key. It helps everything else fall into place under the married name. :) It's strange, because no one here knows of me under my maiden name. Talk about a new life!

Ah ha...see I lived in the US last year for 6 months and have a SSN and have a credit rating now.... So I wonder what I'll need to to once I get there. Go to SSN with marriage certificate and get my name changed?
