Hi Fellow VJers,

Here's another question for the forum probably for those from India, I'm not sure if other countries have this also.

ECNR or ECR (Emigration check not required) or (Emigration check required)

Does anyone know if we require any of these stamps on the passport? I'm confused. I thought Police clearance and passport clearance is all that's required. Now my wife is asking me about this.

Anyone? I appreciate your help on this. Thanks!

It is required while leaving New Delhi so I assume that is also required from Mumbai. The passport office simply stamps it on the last page (I think) of the passport as an endoresement. She must have an old passport becasue from what I understand, all new passports already get that stamp. My wife got her passport stamped with the ECNR from the Chandigargh Passport office.

Good luck,

KP

My wife gor her passport in March 2006. I had told her about this ECNR stamp (as a few fellow Indians had warned me about this), so as soon as she got her passport, she looked at it and it already had the stamp. She then found out (from I *think* a reliable travel agent) that the new passports starting 2006 already have this useless stamp. Apparently you get hassled on the way out of India if you don't...

Hope that helped...

Since this is not mentioned on the embassy website(s), I would not be surprised if this is not a required thing. WOuld someone please post their experience?

Thanks,

Hi,

I know about this because one of my friends got hassled on this while going to China and then I found out about it.

Its a stamp that is required by the Indian immigration authorities for you to leave the country for certain countries only. I don’t have the complete list with me now, but leaving Indian shores for all countries in North America and Europe do not require a ECNR.

Till 2002, all passports had to get it done from the authorities before leaving since usually they would not get the stamp at issuance of passport. Since then, while applying for passport you have to show some proof like graduation certificates or some other certificates to get the stamp in your passport while being issued. However, if you are unable to do so, you have to get the stamp for every time you leave India for a country not on the list.

In fact, my friend, who has been using his unstamped passport to go back and forth to New Zealand never had any problems since New Zealand is one of the countries for which you do not require the stamp. However. this last time, he wanted to visit his Chinese wife's home in Shanghai and had a flight for there from Delhi and that’s when he got stopped at the airport and had to delay his flight for one day to get the stamp.

Since this is a stamp required by Indian authorities to leave the country, and has nothing to do with the American visa or entry to the US, its absence/presence has no effect on any visa approval for any other country including the US.

I hope this answers your question......

Niten
