Hi everyone,

Here is our plan. I(USC) want to go to jamaica and stay with my Fiance until his visa is approved and we come back to US together. It should be approved November or December. I'm leaving the second week of September to go to Jamaica. So I should be staying with him for 3 or 4 months. I would like to buy a round trip ticket and just change the date on the ticket once I get through airport because i don't know exactly when I will be returning. How hard is it to change the date on a return flight? Option B would be to just buy a one way ticket. What proof do I need to show that I will be returning to the US? I know I can not stay for longer than 5 months, but I don't know when exactly he will get approved and we will be headed to US. I hope this is not to confusing and this is just based on our plan. I know there may be possible delays or denial for his K-1 visa. If that happens i will just go back to US without him and try to sort things out in another way. Thanks for your help.

Hi,

buying a "flexible" ticket is usually doable. Those tickets allow you to change the dates with no additional charge. Though they are more expensive than the regular tickets (sometimes twice the price).

I don't know how it goes exactly for the one way tickets from US to Jamaica but it is usually a lot more expensive (and you'd had to buy 2 times a one way!!) and it may give you a hard time (or even be impossible) at security point since it can be hard to prove your intent to return. That said I don't know how hard they look into that for people going OUT of the US.

It seems to me buying a "flexible" ticket is the cheapest for low risk solution. It is what I did 1st time I came to the US because I booked it so much in advance, I couldn't get the return date yet.

Good luck on your journey

Thank you :) The flexiable ticket sounds like the best way to go with the least amount of hassle. I was unaware of flexible tickets. One less thing on my laundry list of things to get together before I leave. Thank you again. :)

You can buy a one way ticket to Jamaica they will not bother you I did it twice before and my sister did it a few times herself. You just put a estimated time on your departure form. They usually don't ask about your returning ticket. Your ticket might be more or less expensive it depends on the month you are traveling.

Just wanted to say to you Congrats for being able to go spend the waiting period with your honey! It's such a horrible process, but being able to be with him is going to make it so much better. Best of luck and I hope you both will be celebrating Christmas in the U.S.

Last time I was in Jamaica they asked for my proof of return. I think they can deny you entry if they feel you may not return to US. I heard that if i didn't have a return ticket they could need proof of ties to US and proof I will have money to take care of myself while there like a letter from fiance saying I will be in his care ect.

Thank you for your support. We had some hard times and didn't think i would beable to come becuase of things on my end and then he lost his job, but God was right on time because before I was going to say forget about me coming to stay, Nattoy got two jobs and got us our very own place! neither of us have even lived with a boyfriend/girlfriend before. You should hear us. Were like little kids so excited about what we will do. i haven't seen nattoy in 8 long months :( Some days are fine but some nights when I talk to him on the phone I just want him with me so bad to the point it hurts. I'm sure everyone knows what I'm talking about. I see that you live in Orlando. I live in Arcadia about two hours away. Maybe once we get our hubbies here we could go on a double date to celebrate. It would be nice to celebrate with 2 other people who know exactly what we went through. :)

Just wondering, if you leave your job how will you get around the I-134 requirements at his interview?

i take it you will quit your job to go live with him? How will you show proof of your employment and ability to sponsor him?

..I only say this because I wanted my USC fiancee to come live with me for the waiting period but looking ahead to the interview and I-134 form it looks like without her proof of regular and steady employment in the US the K1 would be declined..

anyone know if this is true?

I feel your pain, I just got back from a 3 week visit to my fiancee and it felt like more like 2 days. I miss her so much.

You definitely need a return ticket - also, immigration laws in JA have changed - the maximum stamp you will get now is a 3 month stamp, after 3 months you have to request an extension of the visa, which costs about $10000JA. I think you can get it in Mo Bay, but if not you have to travel to Kingston. Also, the max you are allowed to spend per calendar year in JA is 6 months on a tourist visa.

Ditto the concern about the I-134 - Do you have a co-sponsor or a job that you can work while in JA to meet the income requirements?

Believe me, I know your frustration, and hope it works - but please make sure you consider all the factors.

Oh wow Arcadia, that's not far from Port Charlotte , is it? I have family down there and think I remember them talking about it. You guys have a lot of orange farms? I would love to meet up with you and both our hubby's. Mine is already here so we are ready as soon as you BOTH come back and get settled.

I totally feel you on the pain you feel when you can hear their voice through the phone, but not be able to touch and hold them. I'm so excited for you to be able to go and spend this waiting period with him. I wish I could have.

I believe you already stated that your mom fully qualifies financially and is willing to co-sign. I know some people who were students with no income, but were able to get their K-1 approved no problem because they had a co-sponsper. Plus you said you have some letters saying you will be employed as soon as you return home, so I think you don't have to worry at all about this. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Where in Jamaica will you be living and when do you leave? That is sooo sweet of hubby to work his tail off to get you two a place. Hubby and I had never lived with a signigicant other either and I must say it takes some adjusting, but love gets you through it and the good of it defintely outweighs and tweaks you have to work out. Life on the beach, in JA, with your honey how much better can it get??

Keep in touch! Are you on Face Book?

I-134- I did much research on this becuase I didn't want to go if we were going to get denied becuase of me not having a job. I will not work while I am there, but I have worked up until the point of me going to JA and all of my adult life along with attending school. i will also have a letter stating I will have a job upon my return. My co-sponsor/my mom makes enough to qualify us. People who do not work can get approved with a co-sponsor. The stories I heard of people mot getting approved are people with a co-sponsor who qualifies, but they themselves have never worked or didn't show any signs of working once the fiance comes, or the person has been on government assistance their whole life. So I am confident we will be ok on this.

I was not aware of the rules changing and am going to have to make some phone calls and do more research on the topic of me staying there. I would hate to get denied entry or do anything to cause us problems. After I find more info on the subject I will start a new post.

Thompson2- Yes thats Arcadia. Orange trees and cows! LOL It would be an awsome accomplishment to beable to come to Orlando with Nattoy and go out with you and your honey! I am on facebook. My email is lherren239@yahoo.com. Yes I am very proud of Nattoy. he knew how much I wanted to be an Island girl for awhile and he helped me reach my dreams. Still praying everything will workout.

Thanks everyone for helping me figure this thing out and giving me knew things to think about and different perspectives:)

Cutiehurt,

Thank you. I see now I was not properly informed about the process. I tought I could just go to Jamaica on a round trip and make sure I come back before 5 months, and the only thing I would have to do was change my return ticket. What would you suggest i do to beable to stay with my fiance until his interview? I was thinking to get a round trip ticket for 2 and a half months. bring documents of what is in my bank. Say i have 5 grand in the bank. Do you thing that will be sufficient? I could also get a noterized letter from my mom saying she will send me money if need and give me support and i could have my fiance get me a noterized letter stating he and his family will support me. Do you think that will be a good idea? Where do I apply for my extention and I guess i will have to change my return date after the extention is granted. How do these extentions get granted? Will me waiting for my fiance's interview be a good reason for an extention? I'm going to see what i can find on google right now. Thank you for your insight. What a life saver

Hi nicole,

This is your best bet: Book your ticket ensure its a return ticket. no one way. when you get to immigration jus let them know that that you are on vacation. You will be visiting your boyfriend. ensure that the immigration card that you complete @ ques 18 intended address you have your boyfriend's name and # as well as address. as long as you have this info it shouldnt be a problem. also ensure that you have that letter from the bank with whats in ur account. to be honest you wont need the letter from your mom. jus be confident in your presentation. You will be landed for 3mths so if you come in Sept they will give u a date in Dec. if you need to stay longer than that then the extension is JA$10,000 and you will have to produce the confirmed return date on ticket as well as the updated bank statement for it to be approved. hope that helped. if you have more questions on this let me know

Perfect. This helped out a lot. My worries are gone. Thank you

I always book my ticket online so, when I go to the airport I just show my passport. When I fill out the Customs form, I put my estimated time of stay and they are me why am I visiting and who I am visiting. They never ask me about a return ticket. When I go through Montego Bay, I don't get much of a hassle. If your Customs card is filled out completely, its pretty much two questions stamp and a Welcome back I get.
