Demanding the poor work for welfare is a dodgy issue, for lots of reasons.

they actually do make them work in NY already. They have to go through a job-training course at the Dept. of Labor and they get them jobs - then they lose their welfare, find a way to get fired so they can get it back

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

That isn't really the same thing - asking welfare recipients who are unemployed to seek employment, providing training for them to improve their chances of getting employment and demanding that they prove they are actively seeking employment is perfectly reasonable. Demanding that a welfare recipient completes some kind of piece work task before they get their food stamps or whatever really isn't.

One of the biggest problems concerns the issue of current contractors providing services at a rate that conforms to the minimum wage standards, with people being quite properly employed by government agencies to perform these services and providing employment for people when the income they receive is not in any way tied to the work they perform. That is a huge conflict of interest for a government department to handle, how easy would it be for those currently employed to provide these services to simply be sacked to allow for the unemployed to provide these services at a fraction of the cost. How ironic would it be for someone currently employed losing their job, only to end up doing that exact same job but this time in order to receive welfare instead of a fair wage? Yes, this issue is very, very dodgy.

I think most of you are missing the point of what this guy's trying to do. He's attempting to give disenfranchised folks from the inner-cities an opportunity to "get away" from that lifestyle and start over.

It's not like he's going to bus entire families out of the projects and make them work at forced labor prisons. He's giving the young men an opportunity to "choose" to go to this place instead of ending up in the "mandatory" prison that most of them would end up in without that opportunity.

To some ears, it sounds racist and like he's placing "all people on welfare" in the same category. But, in reality, he's going with the numbers and providing a workable scenario that has a good chance of succeeding.

Additionally, taking the bucks out of the herd will lead to less "future welfare recipients" so it's actually a win-win for everyone! I can't believe you guys aren't on board with this one!

You are the first person to introduce any suggestion that the problem with this scheme might lie in 'racism'. Certainly a total non issue as far as I am concerned. Work for welfare is inherently difficult to initiate in a form that provides help for the recipients of the program without causing difficulties. I have explained one area where I believe there could be problems already.

SO..... who's coming out of the inner cities?

One of these days, I'd like to hear a politician who talks about welfare and welfare recipients to specify the programs that constitute welfare. The reason I bring it up is because I know people who consider UI and SSDI welfare.

I do not have a clue what you are asking.

Do you even know what an inner city looks like? I am guessing you don't live anywhere near one nor have you ever driven through one on a clear summer day.

Defining that would be useful. It makes no sense to demand those who are currently working full time already do some kind of work to get their benefits.

What I'm asking is what color are the people who live in inner-cities?

You pointed out that I'm the first person to say something about this possibly being construed as a racist policy yet you're somehow unaware of what the color (or race) of the folks this is most likely to benefit is?

I know people who consider UI and SSDI welfare.

Those aren't politicians, are they?

I'm sure she's seen one on TV!

Driven through one..... ha!

So true, but I've heard stories.

Your question is stupid.

turquoise.

 you're kidding, right.

Depends who's asking. You would have to be a bit of a ####### to believe that I have no experience with inner cities :)
