Hello everyone, please share some insight. I want to know if one way ticket is fine, because round trip is so expensive, I'm planning to leave next month and we wanted (me and my fiance) to just buy one way. Did anyone gt to the United States using one way ticket with a k1 visa?

I am assuming you and your fiancé(e) would be flying to the USA after the consular interview issuance of a K-1 visa. Since the K-1 visa is only valid for 1 entry, CBP Officers would probably figure that a K-1 visa holder would only have a one-way ticket.

For entry into the foreign country, you may be required to present a return ticket back to the US. It won't matter if it was purchased as a round trip or two one way tickets; customs officials will only want to see that it is a return ticket or ticket to another country all together.

No, I will be flying alone

Forgive my confusion. Are you flying alone TO the United States on K-1 visa? Are you intending to enter the United States with a K-1 visa? If the answer to both questions is yes, then you only need a one-way ticket since a K-1 visa is good for 1 entry only.

I found RT tickets to be the cheapest. I bought her a RT from Manila to LAX knowing full well she was coming 1 way. But to answer you, yes 1 way is perfectly fine. There is considerable discussions here on VJ about the advantages and costs of RT vs. 1 way tickets.

My experience in sept 2009 1 way from Manila to LAX 1292.00

RT from Manila to LAX 821.00

Needless to say 1/2 of her ticket was not used!

Buy whatever is cheaper. However, if you buy a round trip ticket be SURE to cancel the return ticket after arriving in the US. There have been a couple of VJ members lately who were denied AOS because the immigration officer thought they'd used their return ticket to leave the US.

Good point. However I am not sure how the officer would know you have a still valid RT ticket. From what I remember, the AOS package did not contain any reference to tickets like the 129F did. The officer at POE did not ask either. Maybe if you tell them at an interview? Does the officer have access to airline ticket records? We were approved with no interview so I am not sure if they would ask to see your tickets.

To be safe I agree and cancel the return portion if your scheduled return is dated after your AOS package.

The background checks USCIS do on your AOS, prior to any interview, include running your name through airline passenger manifests. If you have a return ticket, and never check in to that flight, the airline will try to resell it to someone flying standby. If the gate personnel fail to replace your name on the passenger manifest with the standby passenger's, your name will show up as being on a flight that left the US. It's the airline's screwup, but USCIS trusts the airlines more than they trust you.

It's almost certainly fixable via appeal, as long as you didn't do anything dumb (yes, I'll say it) like waiving any right to appeal by entering on the VWP, but it's still a big huge hairy mess, and it's your responsibility (and $$$) to fix it.

Because of this possible complication, I wold go so far as to say to the OP that it's better to buy a one way ticket than a round trip, even if it costs more. [if one-way is cheaper that makes it a slam dunk!] One more moderate risk (small probability but potentially catastrophic consequences) you don't need to take on.

Based on the above example, the extra $300, or so, it may be for a one-way ticket sounds like it will be worth the peace of mind. However, I made an inquiry to my local travel agent, and they told be the one-way ticket for my fiancee would be about the same price as my round-tripper.

I used a one way ticket, no problem whatsoever. the only question was asked by a gentlemen at the security check before boarding on the first flight to the US. because he had not seen the visa he asked me about my return. I simply told him that I had a fiance visa and did not have a return flight. he checked my passport, saw my visa, gave me my passport back and said "have a nice flight".
