Old Testament stuff. Jesus endorsed some parts of the Old Testament and superseded others. Things like the 10 commandments he endorsed. BS like stoning people that commit adultery he overturned and through his life he rewrote other things like burnt offerings. The main theme of his life is forgiveness and tolerance.

So, when we're all lopped into the same category, how can we say, "this is Christianity... this isn't?" Are we strictly going by what Jesus endorsed and what he didn't?

By the way, Jesus was alive over 2000 years ago... isn't it time for another update? Christianity 2.0?

Not trying to be a smart@$$ here, just saying, if you have to cut and paste different parst of the book, who's to say what counts and what doesn't?

See above.

maybe for the christians who read the bible like those old school "choose your own adventure" books, only it's "choose your own laws to follow and which to ignore". others certainly don't see it that way. they don't agree with the " we want our foreskins and bacon cheeseburgers, ftw" christians at all.

I can't believe people pay for their kids to get educated when they can send them to school for free. They're already paying taxes so their kids can get educated. Why pay twice?

i'm sure yr familiar with the phrase you get what you pay for. in a lot of places, public school really emphasizes that sentiment. some parents feel the extra cost is worth it. some feel that they're essentially hamstringed by the limitations of educational content that is allowed in public schools, and want it included in their child's school education. some appreciate the smaller class sizes, smarter use of funding for education than administration, and stuff like that.

Those things rocked!

The vast majority of folks I know how have their kids in private school take no more interest in their education than those who send them to private school. However, they feel the cost is justified because they can claim, "I spent $7,000 last year on my kid's education" or they can put a "Christian" stamp on it.

From what I've observed, what kids get out of school is directly proportional to their parents involvement, regardless of how much money they spend.

i found some at a garage sale a few weeks ago, and bought every last one of them for my son to read. i loved them too!

yr completely right about that, and private schools have their own drama, debauchery, and bs, just like any free school. and forking over a bunch of cash isn't going to replace raising your own kid. so far i've been impressed though with the level of education my son has received at one. parents do have more of a say in how the school is ran, and things like that. it's very participatory, sometimes for the worst, but usually that's not the case.

Can you imagine if parents participated in public schools like that?

It seems most parents have no problem griping about their kids' education but then when it's time for a parent/teacher conference or PTA meeting they're nowhere to be found.

the other side of that coin is parents tripping over themselves to be everywhere, all of the time , for anything school related because they think it makes them look good in front of everyone else. and shows how little they need to work, and all that #######. i know more than a couple people like that, and it gets kinda obnoxious.

Very true, but I'd take that over no participation any day.

Absolutely. I do not think however that you can divide private school children as children of non participating parents and public school children as children of those who do. Nothing is that clear cut.

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Would you not say there's a higher level of participation in private schools simply based on "seeing to their investment?"

It was those parents I wanted to see most when I taught, since they were the ones I'd invite into the classroom to observe on random days.

The ones that I feared were the ones that would insist on interrupting you WHILE YOU TAUGHT. That worked for about a week until we complained to the principal, and transfers to teachers from parents were only permitted after hours.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Silent observers would be better.

This reminds me of that thread a while back where the mom wanted to sit through sex-ed with her 15-year-old son. HA!

Some parents genuinely love their children, and enjoy time spent with them. I do not think these parents can be identified by income or desire to place their children in private education.

Yep... had those. We thought about having rooms with two way mirrors for the students' sake not to be apprehensive and for them to act 'naturally', but we didn't want to push privacy laws to the limit in FL.

Observers would sit at the back and would be sanctioned by the school, along with a little bit of training in legal stuff. Classroom behavior was awesome when we had these... and the parents that showed extra interest got star stickers at the end of the day and got to join their kids in Pizza Fridays once a month.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Pizza is the best bribe in America.
