Here's the problem though

Let's imagine for a moment that I'm racist against black people. I might use the n*gger word a few times and make references to blacks not being able to run a piss-up at a brewery with African nations being used as an example. Let's assume I do this and get suspended a few times.

So what happens if I engage with black VJers, have a personal disagreement with them and rather than jumping out with the "#### off n*gger" comment (or something similar) which would merit a suspension, I start responding to them specifically with inner city slang?

I think you have to be able to read intent as well as context, that just because "gringo" in and of itself may not be offensive, the application of the word in specific reference to mexican VJers amounts to race hate.

Oh, I know what you wanted it to be about ... but that's not the point, is it?

The essential contradiction here is that that you started a thread to demonstrate a point by doing something you later admit you hate others doing. I think that's funny and I'll bet I'm not the only one that sees it that way.

I also think it's funny that the focus of your ire probably only knew the current meaning of the word he was using, without a clue of its origins and how it could boomerang right back to him. That part was hilarious.

I have always held the view that the majority of name calling that goes on in VJ OT does not cross any lines. However, if people find how I set about things humerous that's fine with me.

For the record I believe that if you know BY's pattern of behaviour when addressing certain people, his gringo comment could only be perceived as provocative. I personally did not classify it as an example of hate speech, just provocative and completely absurd. It was the equivalent of an Australian calling a Jamaican a Limey.

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Once again, a lot of these problems could be avoided if OT were held to the same TOS everyone else is, instead of a nebulous "loosely interpreted" adherence that is left up to every individual's interpretation.

That would solve the problem, but it would also render VJ OT the equivalent of a trip to small world.

So basically it would solve 2 problems. :)

In seriousness though, if OT really needs to be held to a different set of standards (and I'm not convinced it does), then at the very least it needs its own TOS. This business about OT being in a gray area does a disservice to everybody.

What’s an absolute joke is Cleo’s selective anger over comments, yet insinuates she wants OT to be held to an equitable higher standard. Okay then, let’s play it this way, how many conservatives have had Cleo defend them when they were being attacked or insulted over the years? Anyone?

Cleo and her like-minded mates on here seem to feel that most insults or so-called “name-calling” is acceptable, as long as someone does not mention anything about their country. Furthermore, she’s gets agitated with being labelled a liberal, which is really just pointing out a common mindset, yet has no problem with her mates personally insulting posters they disagree with and basically dislike. Need a bother listing the names of these posters.

What’s really funny though is both her and Pike coming on here and acting all innocent; apparently even puzzled by A.J’s suspension. Certainly wasn’t the norm a few years back right? Back then it was a case of take jabs at a poster you dislike, antagonize them as much as possible and then wait; poke more to speed up the process if need be. The second this person trying to have a discussion, regardless of their opinions, has enough and pushes back and most likely harshly, the report button was hit. A.J has a history of insults. A.J also has the attitude that because he does not care if he is banned, he can push the line.

Speaking of the past, as pointed out by others in similar threads, what is your deal Cleo and Pike with it? Why bring up things from three to even five years ago? Is that simply the best you have? I’ve probably disagreed with everyone on here at once, even insulted them, yet I don’t and most others [well conservatives] sit there and keep a mental log of who said what and bring it up into every third or forth discussion.

The funny thing about this situation is that her new mate, as per being her friend, states the following to me, well it seems most have been removed, like the threat, yet Gringo offended Cleo.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

No, it wasn't, because Jamaicans have never been called Limeys by anyone.

Exactly my point all along, Mexicans are not called gringo, they call americans gringo.

Strange how when I've been on the receiving end, you have no issue. In fact, you are usually the number one offender. As I have told you before, get over this sanctimonious crusade you are on, as you prove nothing.

Nobody made you VJ police nor have you been given the right to roam the forums looking for someone you dislike to mention something you or Cleo deems offensive.

And your point is? "Gringo" is not offensive. The recent user misused the term. What is the big deal, si man? Edited by TBoneTX

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

Exactly my point all along, Mexicans are not called gringo, they call americans gringo.

So how and why would it be offensive to call him Gringo? Nevertheless, strange how you have never report the word convict being used, which actually is offensive, considering your country of birth. Silly me, that's different of course. Stop being a cry baby right? Basically the equivalent of someone referring to a minority poster as slave, due to their ancestors past. Without a doubt, you would cry murder if that happened.

Your fabrication of this insult says a lot actually. Being that you and I have posted and butted heads in the past, you have seen for yourself [firsthand] how offensive and insulting I can get to others when pushed; when I want to be offensive.

When your buddy was pushing and throwing insult after insult out, even used a come here and say it, you said nothing. Yet the second you read Gringo from me, you are up in arms. Context didn't matter now did it, as you were grasping for straws and its the first thing you felt would have me punished. Do you have a fetish for that sort of stuff?

Now that is what is pathetic, rather than some use of Gringo. Nevertheless, I am still waiting to know how exactly it was offensive. You said I have never used it before, actually I have, to address others who are Latin American and know the word. Why would I call anyone else a Gringo, when they may not know the word?

In fact since you guys love bring up the past so much, guess what I found:

PS Pervert vs gringo (foreigner) who robbed the elderly and murdered another.

My my whose post is next in this thread, can it be..

That picture does paint a 1,000 words A.J, he does look perverted.

I'd say check mate.

Honestly, this is probably the biggest ownage ever.

May the truth show the real bigot, the real ignorant and intolerant who not only deny rudimentary facts but constantly set people up and accuse them or saying things they never said nor meant.

I guess when you have nothing legitimate to say, you have to go after the person. Or may favorite strategy which you and your like-minded buds use, and that is attempt to be clever by using big words or witty jargon; yes even your new bud, who is pretty good at it actually.

Yet this whole thread is you making a fuss about name calling.

The irony here is hilarious, as is the fact that the offending word has its basis in the Latin for Greek.

ahh the irony.

I'll reiterate an earlier point, use the ignore list if you are so sensitive to my posts.

I am willing to bet that if the people who regularly label others racist, bigots, [insert insult] or simply complain about something being offensive left for a month, we would have no drama on VJ for that month. Probably not even a single warning issued, let alone TOS.

Why is this the case some might ask? Because the exact same people who regularly cry foul and are up in arms about another poster's preference of bagels, are the same people who are usually the instigators that are antagonistic; particularly to others with differing opinions. Same people who bring up posts from many years ago to flame a thread. Same people who throw out clever jargon and witty comments, but cannot answer simply questions.

Anyways, I have better things to do that play childish games like this.

Evidently I too need to add a few to my list, rather than waste time responding to this idiocy.

The VJ ignore feature is a bad joke. It's absolutely useless.
