Hi All,

Ok Q regarding medical coverage.

I have OHIP coverage here in Ontario. I don't have any private insurance right now. As far as my fiancee's insurance goes it seems it will cover me as of the day of our marriage (September 25th). So what happens between POE (August 31st) and September 25th? I now I can get some supplemental travel insurance but most of those plans require you to have active OHIP benefits. How long do my OHIP benefits last after I leave...and when do I report my new address with them!?

Thanks!

I didn't bother getting anything - like you I was married a couple weeks after entering and was then covered under my husband's plan.

I filled all my prescriptions before I left and I took a chance.

Sprail!! I love all the creepy winks in that video...

I "took a chance" too. I wouldn't really recommend it, but I'm young and reckless, and really didn't put any thought into it at all.

Hi,

I always get out of country travel health insurance, my son-in-law had emergency surgery in Punta Cana and without his insurance or cash they would not have operated! Life experience has shown me that some risks are too great and you absolutely never know what can/will happen! All in all I am a pretty positive person, but once in awhile I receive reminders that things are not always in our control.

The site below was posted awhile ago on VJ. I also found other health insurance companies specific to immigrants, especially those who may not be covered on their future spouses plans.

"Seven Corners offers an affordable and comprehensive medical insurance program for new or recent immigrants to the United States. It provides up to five years of protection. This policy is ideal for immigrants who are not covered by employer sponsored or government funded programs, self-employed, in-between jobs or retired"

I think what I thought was that it was just 2 weeks - technically OHIP didn't know I'd moved yet so if it was a dire emergency we would have presented our provincial healthcare cards as proof of insurance or gone back to Canada. Yes - that would have been lying, but I didn't feel too bad about it .

Huggles - like you I was probably reckless when I think of it now - but the chances were probably pretty low for both of us.

Was an article in 1 of the Cdn newspapers about how little your cdn health care would cover if u got sick in the USA or some place else!! It was very little!!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I took a chance and ended up needing to go to the ER one night. I now have a few thousand dollars in medical bills to pay and no income coming in. I thought that I would have been covered by my husbands insurance right away (we got married soon after POE) but we didn't realize that because he was only part time, that I would not be covered. I would suggest investing in some kind of "emergency" insurance. A few hundred dollars is a small price to pay compared to what it could be!!

I think it depends maybe. I was visiting my hubby in PA in may 2009 and had to go to the ER due to well miscarriage and I was never charged a thing. Now I'm not sure whether canada ohip covered it or whether the doctor paid my bill but when I called weeks later to ask whEn I would be receiving a bill the administion lady said I owed nothing therefor there would be no bill mailed out. However I would suggust getting something to cover you if you are worried about it, better safe then sorry. Good luck

I filled all my prescriptions before I left and I took a chance.

I did the same, it was only a couple of weeks and I'm generally pretty healthy. If something were to have happened, we had savings that would cover medical bills.

Yeah exactly. I figured the chances of me needing to get emergency medical attention were really quite small. I have never had any medical problems, and I haven't been in the hospital since the day I was born. We also had some savings, and my in laws gave me the assurance that if something was to happen, they would help. So, I really wasn't concerned about it.

But, if it's a concern to you, then a few hundred dollars for the piece of mind may be worth it.
