Thanks for your efforts. Her annual Income in South Africa is below $9,000 so it seems she is not qualified or required to file.What is your understanding?

My understanding is that since she is married, she must file either "married filing separately" or "married filing jointly". Both of those categories have different amounts required in order to file.

So if she files "married filing separately" it looks like she can avoid filing as long as she makes less than the $3,650. But if she makes more than that she must file.

If she chooses to file "married filing jointly" then the amount changes to $18,700.

The question there would be what your income is and if she should consider filing jointly since the two of you are married.

I am not an expert in taxes, but that is what I would interpret. Good luck!
