Well that is what I see here in Hawaii, more Asian/Pacific Islander men with white women. Then you see mostly Asian couples, which can be a mixed race/ethnicity or the same Asian types. It is rare for Asian women to desire white men here, coz white men and white people in general are not too well liked here in Hawaii.

That must've been very frustrating for you. I'm sorry you had to go through that.

I think it depends on where you are. My son looks white but I don't want him going to school in this area, I know he's going to get bullied. This is where my husband and sister in law grew up and they both got singled out for not "being black enough" even though nobody in their immediate family is white. I got a lot of gawking just going to one of my sister in law's school events, it was very uncomfortable.

I think our best chances are to look at places that already have a mixture of ethnicities.

One of my closest friends (white) has hooked up with a Chinese American girl and I have never seen him happier, he is completely smitten. Yes there are people who interracial date for *superficial reasons but I don't think they will overshadow the people who found real love and/or companionship.

*I once read an article that tried to explain a trend of black men dating white women because supposedly it is a status thing, as if to suggest that black women are the bottom of the barrel. I don't know enough about black culture to credit if this opinion is a real consideration (I hope not) but if it is no black woman should have to date an asshat like that anyhow.

Damn it man, you edited your post

thanks for the kind words, yeah i had to deal with the not being chinese enough in hk, and i do look more caucasian but am apparently very chinese in values and culturally. then arriving here in the u.s. i was the weird "white" kid who talked funny and only hung out with asians. HA!

agreed that where you are living being schooled certainly has an impact on how a mixed or multi-ethnic person is received and kids can be mean! Although it is largely accepted in metropolitan areas at least on the surface you would be surprised that there is still widespread ignorance and racism. i live in san francisco, and my husband is thai and chinese although he looks mostly southeast asian people typically think we are friends or certainly not a couple. We often hear..."Oh you're together?" OR incredulous at the fact that i speak chinese.

At any rate I endured very little compared to people i know of other mixed backgrounds still seems to be somewhat more acceptable/palatble to be mixed asian/caucasian than say black/asian or black/white. hopefully my generation will be less apathetic about this and actively become disinterested in ethnicity of a person but rather the "content of their character".

/off soapbox!

i havent noticed any "surge" in asian men and white women but i dont usually pay attention to that. could it be due to the limits (govt or just financial) put on families to have only 1 or two children? sicne it is the males who take care of the parents, asian parents in foreign countries want boys; girls are more likely to be aborted/abandoned. since 1972, in pakistan every month on average they find 30 babies abandoned and approx 120 dead... 98% female. i'd be curious to know teh stats for china.

i CAN answer why i love my husband... we became friends after we discovered similar interests and the more we talked and wrote the more i liked him. i grew to love his mind, his heart, and one day i realized i was in love with him. he is my perfect man... not A perfect man, but MY perfect man. he peeves me off like no one ever has, makes me happy like no one ever has, loves me like no one ever has, and has made me open my heart to him and love him. he gives me trust, love, loyalty, respect... he is an extremely intelligent, beautiful heart and soul, loving, generous, wonderful man. he treats me like the princess i am :innocent: and i treat him like a king. (L) does he treat me well because he is asian? or becasuse of his environment? or a combo? who knows.

until soemthing like this comes up, i dont think of him as "asian"... i just think of him as a man. my man. i am truly a lucky woman.

if you gave your info (receipt #s, full name, etc) to anyone on VJ under the guise that they would "help" you through the immigration journey with his inside contacts (like his sister at USCIS) ... please contact OLUInquiries@dhs.gov, and go to http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact to report anything suspicious. Contact your congressman and senator's offices as well.

It is getting worse, since the economy is still bad and housing prices is still getting higher and higher. Then again, it depends on how a white Haole acts in Hawaii. My dad has had no problems with it, but he has been here for over 40 years. Then sometimes even a nice Haole, just may be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Even for me I get some problems being hapa Haole, until I open my mouth and well, they know I am local. Having said that, a Haole may have no problems at all, and may have a real rough time here. To me that kinda sucks, treating people because of their skin color, not on who they are.

I have made about 10 trips to Hawaii, I am as White as they come.

I have been treated very well by the locals there, comparable to how I am treated in the Philippines......

I spend a lot of time working with native Hawaiians overseas. The jobs they got were one level above the indigenous hires, and for the most part, kept to themselves, and everyone just avoided them in non-work settings. One fellow invited me over for beer and pu pu after work with his freinds. It was there that I found out it was not for any reason other than a mistrust for the mainlanders. There is more to the story, but I can't tell it here, without having the post removed.

fantastic post about "your" perfect man being just that regardless of ethnic background, nice to see that, i get quite tired of hearing how "insert ethnic background here" is better than this because the culture dictates this or that. never a better reason to get together than, you have similar interests and values. continued happiness to you!
