Hi everyone, Im not sure if this is the right forum but I am a little confused. My fiance entered the US on June 21st. THe first available day we could apply for SSn we went to the office (ten days after arriving). THey told us that the immigration officer had put his last name as Alves S**** instead of Alves DE S****... more or less they forgot to put the DE in his last name. So they sent an electronic request and told us to come back 4 weeks later. 4 weeks later we went back adn thy told us that they had heard nothing and that now they will manually make a request by sending all of his documntation in the mail and that once they recieve that it will take 2 weeks to process his SSN. We asked if we should come back and they said if we have heard nothing in 4 weeks we should come back. Next Thursday will be 4 more weeks, 8 weeks in total. His visa is going to expire in a month and we want to get married but the county clerk here requires a SSN to get married!! We are in Florida by the way. Any advice? thanks...

Have you confirmed that a ssn is required?? People travel to the US all the time to get married and obviously they wouldn't have SSN's. The online guide for my county said SSN required but when I went in in person and showed them my passport that was sufficient. Double check.

see here: http://marriage.about.com/cs/marriagelicenses/p/florida.htm it says DL and SSN OR passport and valid I-94

If they are still being difficult you might want to consider a drive to another state and/or county where a SSN isn't required. Sometimes issues like your's happen (with the SSA and name issues).

Good luck!!

p.s. Please remember that the VISA expired the minute your fiancee entered the US, her I-94 is what governs her status now. Given she arrived on 21 June, looks like her status expires 19 Sept. If you write "visa expires" all the time people will get confused and ask you for her I-94 expiry date.

** moved from "Adjustment of Status (Green Card) from Family Based Visas" to " Working & Traveling During US Immigration" as this is relating to a SSN**

We married 10 days after she arrived. She used her passprt and I-94 for ID. They even waived the 3 day waiting period. We got married at the courthouse and then asked where to take the paperwork so we could have it entered into the records. 5 miles later we got a dozen certified copies and we were on our way.

You should explain the situation and see if you can get married with only his passport. Here in PR I got married with my passport only as well, actually, when we got back from the courthouse after we got married my SSN was waiting in the mailbox.

Which county are you in? I applied for my marriage license in Martin County and was married in Orange County. I didn't need to provide my SSN (because of social security screw-ups I can't get one until my EAD at the earliest). The County Clerk took my passport number. I'd advise you to go to a different county to apply for a license... you don't have to apply in the actual county you live. I think it's really strange they are insisting you need a SSN because tourists come to Florida to get married all of the time on the beaches or at Disney and of course they don't have a SSN!

The secondary electronic verification request normally takes at the most a week, not four weeeks. If the SSA does not receive a response from the secondary electronic Verification request, the office is supposed to call to find out what is going on, not automaticlly send a G-845. If the response cmes back and it verifies the status, it only takes two weeks to process the application if it sits on someome's desk for two weeks.

About the only thing they told that is close to be correct is that the office needs to allow a month for the G-845 to come back before the SSA office is to call immigration to find out what is going on with the G-845.

Hey told us that the immigration officer had put his last name as Alves S**** instead of Alves DE S****..

so if the name stored in the SAVE database does not match the VISA NAME -

you'll need to get this corrected at a CBP "Deferred Inspection Unit" at your nearest international airport

Find one close to you, walk in. Nik has posted the links (you can find the closest one to you) - http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/266072-aos-k-1-ssn-problem/page__p__4076334#entry4076334 Don't bother to call, just walk in, get an officer, and get it changed.

Time is running out for you - after day 74 past POE date, not eligible to apply for SSN again until after EAD in hand.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
