There are things that we can change by changing our attitudes and being more positive, but for the most part, we can not change things simply by being cheerful or being positive. We can not make cancer go away by thinking positively and telling someone that ones attitude affects the outcome is pretty outrageous, the inference is that if you do not get better it at least as much down to a bad attitude as it is to the normal progress of the disease. That is appalling. It is time to stop the rot. The secret was ####### and so is Dr Dyer and his precious shift. Bad things happen, and part of the process of resolution is going through the emotional spectrum, anger, sadness, finally acceptance. Being cheerful is not always appropriate, thinking positive not always possible and there is no good to be had by beating oneself up because we can't always be positive.

My Mom has several of Dr. Dyer's books. I haven't read any of his material but have watched segments of him on PBS. I think he has a lot interesting ideas, but he seems to pump out these books and specials like he's a mill. I'd love to see him on a panel of other doctors to see how he interacts with others in such a forum.

There is nothing wrong with being positive appropriately, and sometimes a shift in attitude is desirable, but it is not a panacea, and that seems to be the current view - all that's wrong is we are looking at things the wrong way. Being sick with a terminal illness is a not a bad thing, it is a gift! #######, a terminal disease is not a ###### gift, it is a death sentence and there is nothing particularly positive about that. Yes, in the end we have to come to terms with things like that but we do not have to be all happy clappy about it.

Here are some cheery quotes:

A mind at peace, a mind centered and not focused on harming others, is stronger than any physical force in the universe.

Wayne Dyer

I'll bear that in mind next time someone tries to shoot me.

Abundance is not something we acquire. It is something we tune into.

Wayne Dyer

I'll tell my tomato plants that, I'm sure it will help them.

Anything you really want, you can attain, if you really go after it.

Wayne Dyer

Obviously those miserable Africans are not trying hard enough to get food. Clearly famine is a state of mind.

Be miserable. Or motivate yourself. Whatever has to be done, it's always your choice.

Wayne Dyer

Yeah, right, next time my cat dies I'll choose to be cheerful rather than miserable, that is sure to help!

Begin to see yourself as a soul with a body rather than a body with a soul.

Wayne Dyer

That is a problem, I do not believe in the idea of souls.

Conflict cannot survive without your participation.

Wayne Dyer

I guess the Afghan war is over then?

Doing what you love is the cornerstone of having abundance in your life.

Wayne Dyer

Um, I thought we covered abundance already?

Everything in the universe has a purpose. Indeed, the invisible intelligence that flows through everything in a purposeful fashion is also flowing through you.

Wayne Dyer

 Yes, that is why people like you believe terminal illness is a gift. It isn't.

Everything is perfect in the universe - even your desire to improve it.

Wayne Dyer

I do not think he understands the concept of perfect.

Everything you are against weakens you. Everything you are for empowers you.

Wayne Dyer

I'm against violence, I feel faint, I'm for eating lots of chocolate, yay, I feel all better again!

Freedom means you are unobstructed in living your life as you choose. Anything less is a form of slavery.

Wayne Dyer

Oh dear, I guess most of us are slaves, but then I knew that :)

Go for it now. The future is promised to no one.

Wayne Dyer

I love a good meaningless quote, and Dr Dyer us spewing them out like shite.

I cannot always control what goes on outside. But I can always control what goes on inside.

Wayne Dyer

Next time I get food poisoning I will be sure to tell my bowels that one.

I think and that is all that I am.

Wayne Dyer

You will not be needing that 3 course dinner then?

If you are living out of a sense of obligation you are slave.

Wayne Dyer

Many people have obligations, mainly to family but to other responsibilities, that is not my idea of slavery, but of cooperation and living in normal society. How dreadful of me to think that way.

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

Wayne Dyer

Yes, I love when that happens. I'm always changing water into wine this way

It is impossible for you to be angry and laugh at the same time. Anger and laughter are mutually exclusive and you have the power to choose either.

Wayne Dyer

You can not choose to laugh when anger is appropriate, nor should you.

It makes no sense to worry about things you have no control over because there's nothing you can do about them, and why worry about things you do control? The activity of worrying keeps you immobilized.

Wayne Dyer

Oh, my favourite. Everyone that worries about anything is obviously an idiot, not exercising normal, natural and useful caution considering that an outcome might not prove favourable.

Of course there is some truth in all this stuff, but as you say, packaged all neatly like this, it is just another scheme to make money from the gullible. The worst of it is, these people are always let down. That is rather unconscionable, at least to me.

I'm not what anyone would consider a "positive thinking" person. Try as I may, I don't think I am going to change it. I'm fine with it for the most part, I think I get as much stress (or more) from people telling me I'm too negative or I have a problem with my attitude. So I'm not chipper, or happy, or ingratiating, so what? Leave me alone, you'll see a happier person.

If one more person tells me to smile because I look too serious, I might have to punch them. ;)

That's the spirit.
