Particularly the ones engaged in humanitarian projects. Don't want to be spending money on those lousy pakis, they deserve to drown.

Some day folks are going to figure out the military is not the Red Cross, nor is it a police agency.

Life is simple for people who aren't interested in what goes on outside of their front gate.

Also simple for those who've been within the gates of others.

Contractors too.

Contractors will be evacuated in short order when they start getting their heads removed on Al Jazeera again.

I don't think anyone is under any illusions about that, least of all the military. Most military people are justly proud of the aid they give in times of need and take pride in it. Clearly you don't but you are in the minority on such issues and you will not get your wish to see the military withdraw its services in these areas.

Obviously you're under that illusion since you're posting about the military needing to stay in Pakistan to aid flood victims.

Most military people are justly proud of the aid they give in times of need and take pride in it.

Absolutely... but most also understand their job is to do military tasks, not humanitarian aid. Sure, it's nice to help out whomever you can, wherever you can. But, helping victims of national disasters sometimes has nothing to do with national security - which is their job.

Clearly you don't but you are in the minority on such issues

Minority? Where are you drawing these conclusions from?

you will not get your wish to see the military withdraw its services in these areas.

My wish?

Whether or not Slim served in the military is completely irrelevant. The military for many practical reasons is called on to help out in times of emergency. When Catrina happened, should they have simply sat on their thumbs? No. Similarly, the US is proud of its commitment to helping relieve suffering in any part of the world that suffers from a disaster and that isn't going to change, nor should it.

Katrina, who cares about a misspelling, you? I don't think so, nor is it germain to any part of the argument because you know full well what I was referring to.

All I'm concerned about in that theater is that no more troops come back as casualties and no more innocent Iraqis become collateral damage.

Well, then you're in for a real treat because it's about to get real ugly, real fast.

Whether or not Slim served in the military is completely irrelevant.

Any of my experiences or opinions are always irrelevant on VJ. I'm used to it by now.

The military for many practical reasons is called on to help out in times of emergency.

Absolutely... but that's not their primary job and we - as in, we the people - should be conscious of what the military's job is and base their deployments on that. Not our compassion and empathy for other nations.

I think it's wonderful that the US military can help out in other places. Should they? That's up for debate. Pakistani floods? Sure. Have at it. Building infrastructure in Iraq.... not so much.

When Catrina happened, should they have simply sat on their thumbs? No.

Um, actually, yes they should've. The military's job does not include responding to disasters or emergencies here in the US. (Read up on posse comitatus if you have any questions or don't believe my "opinion")

I think what you're referring to is the activation of the National Guard to "aid" in releiving New Orleans of their privately owned weapons, passing out food to those who were "stranded" at the Super Dome, and providing medical care to those who weren't "fortunate" enough to leave in the several days of being warned to do so prior to the natural disaster. Yeah, we probably need more of that around the world too.

Similarly, the US is proud of its commitment to helping relieve suffering in any part of the world that suffers from a disaster and that isn't going to change, nor should it.

Tsunamis, earthquakes, floods, fires, etc., I'm all for the US swooping in, handing out food, setting up shelters, rescuing people, etc.

But, doing the above because of civil unrest.... not so much.

who's that?

I think that was the "English" spelling.
