The Ground Zero mosque must be built

I have been very frank and honest about how I feel. There are moderate, peaceful Muslims of that I have no doubt. Islam itself, when taken to it's philosophical extreme is not moderate, nor is it widely practiced in anything resembling tolerance in the American sense of the word.

Not building this mosque, in this spot, is not denying Muslims their absolute right to religious freedom in the United States. But painting anyone who feels anything but warm fuzzy's about this "project" as bigoted Muslim hating extremists is EXACTLY the same logic as claiming not building it somehow is simply a win for bigoted Muslim hating extremists. There are reasonable persons who oppose it. I realize you are kissing S's ####### but I have been nothing but honest about how I think. Which by the way is also an inalienable right here in the USA.

The argument that building the mosque on the WTC site is an affront to the victims and "a slap in the face", or that it amounts to the "islamization of America" and "letting the terrorists" win ARE bigoted arguments.

They are bigoted arguments because (as people have explained many many times, with much patience and in increasing levels of explicit detail) within them is a clear implication that Islam (as a whole) is synonymous with terrorism and the 9/11 attacks. That is clearly a bigoted stance.

If you want to talk about "reasonable people" why not put forward some reasonable arguments, because so far the only arguments against this mosque that have been aired in public are far from "reasonable".

Now, being honest, what actually is it about the idea of building a mosque in the vicinity of (ie about 2 blocks away) that you object to, exactly?

What she said.

The question keeps getting asked "how close is too close?" Landing gear from one of the planes went through the roof of the building at this sight. That puts paid to the other repeated claim that this site is not part of ground zero. It clearly is.

The planes flew over downtown Manahattan too. So what?

Ground Zero is the WTC site, the fenced off hole in the ground that has been a construction site for the last 8-9 years.

Oh, I see, so because some wreckage landed around that area it can't now be used for anything at all? Good to know, we'll all pay for the wrecking balls - or is it because it's a MOSQUE that reminds you of TERRORISM pure and simple that is your only objection to it?

what I don't get and something I didn't know before today was that there is already an Islamic center that is even closer to Ground Zero... why is no one protesting about that??

Curious. Would you object to a Christian church being built there? Synagogue? Buddist temple?

Maybe they should, according to their 'logic.'

Because people allow the media to tell them what to think and talk about. It's a non-story and would be for most people if it weren't for the bigots making a stink about it, disgracing themselves and their country.

Did any Muslims die on 9/11 that weren't terrorists?

I would have thought so, the target was the World Trade Center, and there were people of all faiths and none at all who worked and visited there, not to mention I am sure not all victims were Americans. I don't know the details tbh however.

The bigots are working there way up to that. That's what happens when you allow bigots to run public sentiment.

Which begs the question why a small loud-mouthed group of people are trying to cut out law-abiding people simply because they hold their religion to be responsible for the attacks.

Answer - they are irrational bigoted people.

Picture this. On the anniversary of 9/11 and they are reading the names of those who died. All of a sudden out rings this:

It really does boil down to sensitivity on both sides.
