Amen! This isn't hallowed ground - it is just a downtown urban neighborhood that is not too far in proximity from Ground Zero. If NYC wants to treat Ground Zero and all the neighborhoods around it as hallowed ground, well then it will need to buy up the entire section of Battery Park and just cover it with some grass.

If the mosque is not built because of this frothong mob then the bigots win. That must not happen. If it does it is a stain on everyone.

If the mosque is not built, it will most likely be because of a failure by the developers to secure funding. The developers so far have shown no interest in a compromise, going so far as to even refuse a meeting with Governor Paterson.

So 2 blocks is too close?

What about 3? 4? 10? How about Long Island?

Staten Island recently blocked the building of a mosque there, so, it seems moving a few blocks isn't enough either. Real estate values in lower Manhattan are also a consideration.

As far a the need or the use of a community center there, why not? There are lts of Muslim employees, business owners, taxi drivers, police officers, etc., who live and work in the area, there are also non-Muslims who can use the facilities. May what NY needs is a day without a Muslim to see how much they depend on them.

There are two small, overcrowded mosques in the area already. Something that is rarely spoken of is the mosque at the Pentagon; it was also hit on 9/11, lest we forget. Is anyone for moving the mosque in the Pentagon?

Do something positive: there is a Greek Orthodox church very close to the sacred hole whose congregation has been misplaced. They have been trying for years to get permission to rebuild on their original site, with no success. Let's do something positive with this situation and work to help this little church get rebuilt so its Christian community can be whole again. Google it and sign the petition supporting its effort. I did.

I find it funny that its mostly republicans from other states that have such a big problem with this.

Oh and I also love how they call it the 'ground zero mosque' when its actually an islamic center being built down the block

I live in NY and everyone I've talked to so far about it here doesn't see a problem with it.

Maybe they should focus on working with Democrats on national issues like creating jobs. Oh snap that's right... they don't want to since they are (also) desperate to score vote brownie points at the tip of fear and bigotry, as they usually tend to do when they don't propose any solutions that move the nation FORWARD.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

I actually chuckle at this whole overblown "Hollowed ground" thing too.

They should build another business center with a Bronze memorial in the plaza and be done with it.

No, it's not. Mosques are not synonymous with terrorism or terrorists. Are you going to be honest about how you really feel about the muslim religion yet?

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

I have been very frank and honest about how I feel. There are moderate, peaceful Muslims of that I have no doubt. Islam itself, when taken to it's philosophical extreme is not moderate, nor is it widely practiced in anything resembling tolerance in the American sense of the word.

Not building this mosque, in this spot, is not denying Muslims their absolute right to religious freedom in the United States. But painting anyone who feels anything but warm fuzzy's about this "project" as bigoted Muslim hating extremists is EXACTLY the same logic as claiming not building it somehow is simply a win for bigoted Muslim hating extremists. There are reasonable persons who oppose it. I realize you are kissing S's ####### but I have been nothing but honest about how I think. Which by the way is also an inalienable right here in the USA.

Who said you have to feel 'warm and fuzzy'? I certainly didn't - I simply don't care about mosques so they don't make me feel warm and fuzzy wherever or whenever they are built. However, I am not 'sensitive' to the idea of them being built because there is nothing to be 'sensitive' about unless there is a link between terrorism and the muslim credo in general and the symbolism of mosques in particular, which there isn't.

Now, being honest, what actually is it about the idea of building a mosque in the vicinity of (ie about 2 blocks away) that you object to, exactly?
