you get the tax revenues.

and besides, do you feel the same way about agriculture? large scale agriculture does a real number on ecosystems, do you mind that seeing how we city folk eat most of the food?

tax revenues hardly make up for the pollution, the traffic congestion, and so on.

what do you define as large scale agriculture? and speaking of city folk eating, what's for lunch today? :hehe:

i have absolutely no problem with coal. we have a ton of it and as we've been told, waste is evil.

expect steven to protest on your doorstep this weekend.

From a practical point of view, it is easier to mediate and control environmental effects when production is consolidated and standardized in large scale corporate chunks, than when it becomes decentralized. As an example, see what an environmental disaster mom and pop biofuel production has become.

How do you feel about the trend among wealthy urban yuppies to pretend their lifestyle doesn't otherwise harm the environment by cultivating so-called 'urban farms'?

Sorta related. Having your street facing roof covered with solar panels has now become the new status symbol. I wonder if they come in any color besides cobalt blue.

Backyard farms could be done in a safe and sane manner, but best intentions aside, things happen, and go unnoticed, when nobody is really paying attention.

Not just backyard farms, but rooftop farms. Have you seen those?

Only on TV, but not really on a large scale. At least they are not dumping stuff directly on terra firma. Besides, any runoff they produce competes with everything else that is going down the storm drains. That can be monitored without that much effort.

I suspect you are speaking of stuff you know well. I've only read about this ish in books :) My work life has nada to do with ecology or land management.

Roof Shingles roof shingles, and photovoltaic shingles

solar_panels_unisolar_shing.jpg

Combining solar innovation with award winning design, the flexible SHR assumes the pattern of traditional asphalt shingles. The new PV shingle enables roofs of residential or commercial buildings to become sources of electricity as well as protection from the elements. The PV shingle face is textured to blend and complement the granular surface of conventional surrounding shingles. Each shingle is 12 inches (30.48 cm) wide by 86.5 inches (219.71 cm) long and nailed in place on roof decking over 30 lb. felt sheeting. Electrical lead wires, #18AWG, extend 12 inches (30.48 cm) from underside of each shingle and pass through the roof deck allowing interior roof space connections. Once in place, the sun’s warmth helps bond shingles together forming a weather-resistant seal. Cell exposure 5.0 inches (12.7 cm) x 86.4 inches (219.46 cm). Array size depends on power demands.
