And I'm just going to throw something out there from my personal point of view... I really think people take themselves too seriously.

I love VJ, and spend a great deal of time here. I care about the site so much that I even signed on to be a moderator and offer the little free time that I do have to attempt to help make it a more pleasant place to be.

But I never cease to be surprised at how immature people can be. Now, I could see you all getting upset over arguments with your spouse, sibling, parents, etc. But c'mon people - what's with the drama? This is a message board.

I think we should rechannel all this energy into helping people in the upper forums complete their visa journey :star: that's what it's all about right? I don't know where we would be if it hadn't been for this site!

I have confirmed with Smoke that he is serious in his 'test' run so I am now giving a test thread ban to his account. Once he has satisfied his curiosity, I will reverse the ban.

It's all very well if someone is posting and continually and obviously violating the TOS then yes, I agree that keeping the thread open for others to enjoy and excluding the disruptive element from both sides of the argument is a more positive way to go. However, when it's used to stop one person engaged in polite disagreement with the OP or another poster in that thread then it's biased and heavy-handed moderation in the same way that thread locks have been.

Some people seem to feel that even respectful disagreement with their point of view is ruining their enjoyment of the site and they are all too quick to cry about being picked on or press the report button. I have seen this attitude many times of late. If you are that thin-skinned that you can't accept an alternate point of view then you really shouldn't be posting on an internet forum.

I agree that there are issues of some people being too sensitive and some being too harsh, while some are just problems interpreting tone on the internet.

The question is...is the OP "safe" from the thread bans? If not, wouldn't that also help with the problem a bit? The OP doesn't "always" "win"?

Some people have their thin skinned days, some have their OMG RAWR PMS days. It happens, but I think the overall tone of the UK forum is getting better. There are more people posting than there have been and I think a bit of the fear is gone for some of the newer members! :)

For those who can't come up with a convincing counterargument to the argument at hand will no longer be able to purposefully derail a thread simply because they don't like the argument being made. That wasn't active participation to begin with. It was deliberate sabotage.
