It's not a FIRST resort. Just a few posts up, Ewok says, warning first, button pushing second. The problem is that people making posts which cause the thread to be locked or to get suspended IGNORE the warnings. As Dodi says arbitration/mediation only works when people are willing to come to the table. Instead, when someone says that a comment was a little over the top, there isn't any reasonable response, rather "You can't censor me!!!"/"Lighten up" etc.

I'm pleased with the idea.

BUT I still think moderators need to be less trigger-happy.

I don't know if you're aware of what was happening last night which triggered this idea. Poster A was going on and on making one bigoted statement after another. One or more posters reported him, Kathryn took action by removing the bigoted content from the thread. Meanwhile, Poster B flamed him a little and corrected him on some of his claims. Poster B was suspended for two days by Kathryn, presumably for a personal attack on Poster A. Meanwhile, Poster A merely had his content removed but his posting abilities remained (as of last night) intact.

There is simply too much variability in outcomes, which really hurts the credibility of VJ moderation.

I'm guessing this happened in OT?

Sure would be nice if OT had an actual TOS, instead of the nebulous "loosely enforced" guidelines. It would make life easier on mods as well as members.

Talk about variability AJ? You have speculated quite a bit here.

An excellent read though...

So instead of participating in what has up to this point been a civil conversation, you choose to bait.

Poster A and B are real. A did have his content removed for bigotry by Kathryn. B did flame A and B did correct A. B is now suspended. Those are facts.

The speculation is that A was not suspended. This speculation is based on the fact that he was still posting shortly after the offending posts were removed.

Um no Mox. I simply pointed out that he does not have all the facts. Period.

Don't stir trouble again today.

 no kidding. A few days ago it was Brad essentially telling me I had no life. Which is probably true but not exactly a mod-like thing to say.

In the absence of you filling the community in, we will take the facts we have and construct a narrative around it. That's how it's done.

William33, if you have a problem with me, you are welcome to escalate to Ewok. There is a little report button on the side of my posts, and also a ticketing system.

You're the one causing trouble here. The thread was civil until you decided to bait AJ. You do understand that baiting violates the TOS, don't you?

It's still civil because we've taken the higher road here and refused to stoop to William's level.

Do give Brad a chance though, he really is a good guy, and he did admit to the mistake. I suspect he's going to turn out to be the "go-to" moderator of choice once he gets his sea legs. :)

This is your official warning to stop your attempt at antagonizing.

i think what william is saying is this part is something you're speculating on: Poster B was suspended for two days by Kathryn
