How is being uninformed an excuse? The behaviour is bigoted whether one understands what one is doing or not.

Ok I agree the behavior is bigoted. I still wouldn't label them all as bigots though. I think they would change their minds if more informed which I have tried to do in online conversation with some. These are mostly young, usually nice, 20-something year old girls who don't watch news much. I don't want to write them all off.

You should tell them to pay more attention to matters more suited to them. Like Jersey Shore and the latest happenings in the life of Kim Kardashian.

Yes. It does. Bigotry is based on taking one or more negative elements of a group and imposing those on all members of that group.

The news media (maybe we can agree on this) limits 'fluff' stories. Molesting priests sells papers and air time. Muslim terrorists sells air time, but how Muslims are contributing doesn't. Especially in the US market.

Agreed. I guess now I understand why people don't think opposing the mosque involves bigotry. We're operating off of different definitions.

Just because bigotry is what the media sells does not absolve people of their responsibility.

If it makes people feel better , yes most of the world is probably bigoted. Most is also uneducated, the two generally go hand in hand, but not exclusively.

I see the word Bigot being thrown around here quite a bit. My how that word has changed over the years. Being uninformed has absolutely nothing to do with bigotry.

The exact origin of the word is unknown, but it may have come from the German bei and gott, or the English by God. William Camden wrote that the Normans were first called bigots, when their Duke Rollo, who when receiving Gisla, daughter of King Charles, in marriage, and with her the investiture of the dukedom, refused to kiss the king's foot in token of subjection - unless the king would hold it out for that specific purpose. When being urged to do it by those present, Rollo answered hastily "No, by God", whereupon the King, turning about, called him bigot, which then passed from him to his people.[1] This is quite probably fictional, as Gisla is unknown in Frankish sources. It is true, however, that the French used the term bigot to abuse the Normans.[2].

The twelfth century Anglo-Norman author Wace claimed that bigot was an insult which the French used against the Normans, but it is unclear whether or not this is how it entered the English language.[3]

According to Egon Friedell, "bigot" is of the same root as "Visigoth". In Vulgar Latin, the initial v transformed into b (a phenomenon today encountered in Iberian languages, such as Spanish and Portuguese; visi had truncated into bi in Vulgar Latin (a phenomenon common in French and Portuguese).[1][2]

Yes, as found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bigot

It just goes to show how people use these types of words to exacerbate an issue to a fever pitch.

The history of words is irrelevant to contemporary usage. Anyone who has studied linguistics knows that languages are organic, words come and go out of fashion and even the meanings of words change.

As far as that goes. Someone who is too lazy to educate themselves on the issues and is screaming for the Cordoba mosque not to be built out of "respect" for the 9/11 victims isn't being respectful and is indeed a bigot.

Bigotry and prejudice arise almost exclusively out of ignorance.

No Marc. The word "bigot" is not what has made people turn out in angry protests and make stupid comments that building a mosque is akin to "burning a flag" or "letting the terrorists win".

If the people are screaming, then yeah. If they are just saying they don't think it's the best idea, I wouldn't think that's the same.

The "respect the victims" / "slap in the face" argument is entirely bigoted, no matter who says it, how they say it, or how loudly.

Well, I don't think it's the best idea simply because of all the increased animosity it's caused towards Muslims. But I'm a coward like that and think that sometimes it's better to give up knowing that you were right just to make life easier.
