Well I got the idea from the USCIS 100 civics questions. Slavery is the model answer to a question about the cause of the civil war.

Saywhat is right that stoning is cultural and tribal. There is nothing in the Quran prescribing or prohibiting it. In fact, the Quran dictates flogging for adulterers, and commands them not to marry virgins, but other adulterers or non-believers. It's kind of hard to marry if you've been stoned to death.

Cultures change quite quickly really

If there had been a VJ 400 years ago, anyone saying that Americans should not burn women at the stake would have been decried by all the members as 'having issues' (American for being insane or who's views are not valid)

A person only 200 years ago who said that the British Navy should not flog men to the bone or keel haul them would have been similarly denounced as a maverick or a trouble maker and a liberal.

However, my main point is that many Americans look at the world and the many cultures through a Mctelescope that allows for only one way to do anything - and that is the American way

There are many aspects of our Western culture that must seem equally loathsome and cruel and wrong to outsiders.

My dad spent the war (1939 to 1945) in Northern India and in the deepest jungles of Burma and he told me that those people should left alone as they are far happier than Westerners

I would also add that cruelty and viciousness and hate is the normal condition of the mob, otherwise known as a good section of the lower orders of any society. There would be a majority for public hangings and floggings in many western countries, especially the US - and especially in extremely religious areas like the South. So the beast has not been tamed at all and we need to take a look at ourselves through other eyes.

Finally, (for now) this idea that the Afghans should rise up against their oppressors (the Taliban of course) is so naive because the Taliban have a great deal of support - and so have their ideas and their brand of Sharia law.

If the average Afghan was asked to throw anyone out, it would be the infidel invader first.

The truth is that that this war was doomed from the start - Kipling and the Russians and every invader going back a thousand years could have told us that.

How long would it take someone to convince a Yorkshireman that London beer is acceptable ? Well then imagine how long it's going to take to make an Afghan think that Pat Robertson and the christian evangelicals from Alabama can be an equal friend with them.

Forget it - let's get out, get some beer, and get stoned
