KABUL, Afghanistan -- Taliban militants stoned a young couple to death for adultery after they ran away from their families in northern Afghanistan, officials said Monday.

Amnesty International said it was the first confirming stoning in Afghanistan since the fall of Taliban rule in the 2001 U.S.-led invasion.

The Taliban-ordered killing comes at a time when international rights groups have raised worries that attempts to negotiate with the Taliban to bring peace to Afghanistan could mean a step backward for human rights in the country. When the Islamist extremists ruled Afghanistan, women were not allowed to leave their houses without a male guardian, and public killings for violations of their harsh interpretation of the Quran were common.

This weekend's stoning appeared to arise from an affair between a married man and a single woman in Kunduz province's Dasht-e-Archi district.

The woman, Sadiqa, was 20 years old and engaged to another man, said the Kunduz provincial police chief, Gen. Abdul Raza Yaqoubi. Her lover, 28-year-old Qayum, left his wife to run away with her, and the two had holed up in a friend's house five days ago, said district government head, Mohammad Ayub Aqyar.

They were discovered by Taliban operatives on Sunday and stoned to death in front a crowd of about 150 men, Aqyar said.

First the woman was brought out and stoned, then the man a half an hour later, Aqyar said. He decried the punishment, which he said was ordered by two local Taliban commanders.

A spokesman for the provincial government also condemned the act.

"It is against all human rights and international conventions," said spokesman Mabubullah Sayedi. "There was no court. It was cruel."

Amnesty International called the stoning a "heinous crime" that showed the Taliban and other insurgent groups "are growing increasingly brutal in their abuses against Afghans."

"Amnesty International has warned that the Afghan government should not sacrifice human rights, particularly the rights of women and minorities, in the name of reconciliation with the Taliban and other insurgent groups," Amnesty said.

A Taliban spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment.

The ancient practice of death by stoning has been abandoned in all but a handful of countries. It is still a legal punishment in some countries, like Iran, which justify it under Shariah, or Islamic law, although human rights activists say the Quran never specifically prescribed stoning for adultery.

Last month, Iran's religious authorities called off the planned stoning of a woman convicted of cheating on her husband. Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani's sentence -- which would have been Iran's first stoning since 2008 -- was lifted following a campaign by politicians, rights groups, diplomats and celebrities around the world.

Nasty, bad enough to be sentenced to death for adultery, let alone to be stoned to death. Utterly brutal.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

I quite agree.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Stoning is for savages.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

This kind of ####### just makes me wonder ####### we're still doing there? The only way to ever stop this kind of thing is to remove any and all stones from the country. Scratch that, they'd probably trade stones for poppy seeds then in order to maintain their traditions.

I agree that 'assault stones' are the problem and should be banned

ok here it comes again - apologies :

California is the opposite of Afghanistan. In California , people get stoned first and then commit adultery.

Grinding poverty changes value systems. Take Uganda and the witch doctors - and they aren't muslims.

Who the Alabamans ? I must be tough living in a community full of extreme Christians.

Oh wait they did revolt - 1860. The christians in Alabama revolted to keep black people in chains like the Aghans are revolting to keep stoning. The Taliban ARE the Afghans.

The Afghans think it's right to stone criminals in exactly the same way as Americans think it's wrong to drink a beer on the beach - it's a cultural thing

The fact that Americans don't 'get' cultural differences, or if they do, assume that the foreigners are wrong and the US is right, is why they can never win in the middle east especially

What if the Aghans though it was wrong for Americans to be so obese and were campaigning for Americans to change their culture ? Destroying Walmart delis with predator drones ?

What right have we to go into countries and change their culture ? Invade China and stop em eating bear's willies ? Impose prohibition in Bavaria ?

Stop the Scots releasing prisoners ? Female circumcision in Africa ?

Clean up the child sex trade in Cambodia ?

and so on...

We have to first decide if have we the right - and then decide which countries we are going to invade - to hang their leaders, water board their soldiers and show them how nice we are and to be emulated.

I suggest we don't start with China

Dude, you got some very serious issues.

Thank you I do. I see nothing wrong with actually thinking about the world from multiple view points.

You need to think about these issues rather than trying to apply the values of Tinyville USA to everywhere in the world

..and to realise that people who have different politics and a different world view may not be communists, terrorists or have a mental illness.

This is why I say the US cannot win in the middle east - they simply do not have the power to put themselves in other people's shoes.

They simply try and make the joint into a McGhanistan and it doesn't work any more than Birmingham, Alabama can be turned into Kabul or Karachi.

Actually I lived in a town that was turned into Karachi so perhaps that second example doesn't hold water.
