Yesterday my wife and I met for lunch, and then we drove our individual cars home. Since getting her license and feeling more comfortable driving, she has been driving faster and more aggressively. We were headed home on a 45 mph six lane road and she was ahead of me. She was doing at least 55 when she came up on a guy doing about 50 in the middle lane, and another car in the outside lane. She pulled up on the bumper of the middle car and then blew buy him on the inside, while I was watching from behind. Immediately he pulled behind her and turned on his blue and reds....an unmarked cop car! She pulled over and while I drove by the look on her face was priceless. At first I thought I should stop and try to help, but realized the cop would not care for that at all. I went on home all the way waiting for the phone call and thinking "how much will this cost her and how much is the insurance going to go up".

Several minutes later the front door opened and I saw that sheepish grin. She said the cop asked for her driving license and "blah, blah"(she had no idea what else he wanted to see) She gave him her license, but he still wanted "blah, blah" so she looked in the glove compartment and handed him the whole bundle with the owners manual and papers. He wasn't happy and told her again what to give him. Then yells at her about the speed limit being 45 and she was doing 55 and climbing. She told me that she started to get her money out for the bribe, BUT he let her off with a warning!

You can bet if it had been me I would have gotten a ticket. Now she is so proud of herself for getting away without paying. She did NOT learn her lesson.

Alla escaped several tickets and got one from a woman cop. Of course, she says it is because the woman "hates her" and a man would never have given her a ticket. She beat it in court! But she was real upset when she got the ticket.

Oh, yes, make sure you tell them not to try and bribe the cops. It seems to be the natural reaction.

In Russia, I think the climate has shifted with regards to bribery. I believe that whereas before you could bribe a cop to get out of a ticket, now you have to bribe someone in order to have the right to bribe the cop. Or something like that. I don't keep up on current events.

Saw an article in the Moscow Times a few weeks back that noted the going rate for bribes has gone way up. Wish I had saved it as it compared the average cost of a bribe over the past 5 years.

try explaining to her (in softer words than mine) that what she's doing is a sign of being immature and insecure, and not being cool as she imagines herself. She can amaze men with her stunning beauty in other places, and highways are for drivers who want to get home safely, not to die because somebody is showing off driving the first car in her life ;).

Yep, no lesson there. It's almost better for them to get a ticket pretty quickly since getting out of a ticket only encourages them.

My wife has had only one ticket to date and it was for driving with the lights off and no seatbelt. Apparently the cop followed her for several blocks and she didn't stop until she got home. She hadn't even noticed the cop was behind her with lights flashing and the only reason she stopped was because she was home.

Of course he gave her a ticket. She said she only removed her seatbelt because she was home and ready to get out but he ticketed her for that as well. She beat both charges in court but was not impressed with the whole process. "Why I must lose my time and go to the court when this guy is wrong. In Russia I just beat him @$$ or make for him little payment to leave me alone. I not will be lose my time go to the court two times." I asked her why she didn't immediately pull over because had she done so, he probably would've just told her to turn her lights on. "Because I listen to music."

She has a personalized plate that says "Chupik" and usually the interaction she gets from cops is when they pull up beside her, roll their windows down and ask, "hey, what's chupik?" She puts on her best Lolita act, puts that nose up in the air and really lingers on her words, "It's means lollipop." followed by a little. "Hmmpf." as she drives away. She says the cops just sit there with their mouth open and can't even drive.

To the best and most recent of my knowledge, bribery is still 100% reliable in Ukraine. The most recent "joke" is that Ukraine raised the drinking age to 21 to "give the police a raise"
