We have the same last name

Hi.

My fiancee and I have the same last name. It's a very common last name in Vietnam...Tran. My family originates from north Vietnam and immigrated to South Vietnam in the 1950s. Her family is from the South for many generations. We are not related in any way. Anyway, will this cause any problems? If so, what do I need to do? Thanks.

Its actually really common since almost half the country is named Nguyen... To prepare, should it come up.. work on documenting family trees to show that they dont connect for a least a few generations... another member got a ban because the DoS says he married his cousin and he has gone round and round trying to document that they are wrong... not easy proving the DoS wrong.. even with documentation...

Moving to VN regional as the place it could be an issue is at the VN Consulate

Shouldn't be a problem since 10% of population has that last name.

Especially if you're fiance is from Ho Chi Minh. Not sure what a family

tree would do if that's the case, except make the case stand out and making

it appear that a family connection might be possible.

I was not suggesting that he submit a family tree with the petition or at the interview.. just to document it ahead of time should it be an issue.. as I stated it has come up in the past...

I agreed with A Map. Not to worry, many Vnese having the same last name.. specially Nguyen married Nguyen. I would not worry too much. Worry more on your paperwork, and interview.

I would think if 2 Duongs were getting married, a family tree would be a good idea. 2 Nguyens are probably the norm rather than the exception so a family tree is not necessary. No family tree for me then
