This would be a perfect time for a mod to step in and say "hey guys, this has degenerated into off-topic, please take it offline so the thread may continue on-topic."

Which is to say, I predict thread lock.

It's insane that he's been demanding I back up some phantom claim that he has imagined that I have made. But back on-topic.

I think each regional sub-forum should have it's own junior moderator whose moderating authority is confined to that specific regional forum.

OMG Enough with the moderators........There are enough of them! In fact i think too many and arguing with them has become a VJ pastime.

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

These threads often turn into mod nominations. And after seeing how the mods get torn up I can't fathom why anyone would still want to do it!

You'll notice, however, that it's only certain mods that "get torn up." Good moderation isn't impossible, nor is it thankless. For example, Krikit's name only ever comes up as an example of a good moderator. Susita popped in here yesterday and received nothing but praise. I often rant about "the moderating team," but people are smart enough to know that I'm not a mutually exclusive.

The problem (as you know) is that good moderation is hard work. Some are willing to put in that hard work. Others just want to carry a shiny badge and push buttons. The good ones are appreciated, and I think they know it.

"Good" is most definitely subjective. Kathryn receives the most criticism because she is the most active. To suggest that she doesn't put in hard work, wants to carry a shiny badge and just push buttons is really offensive and I know it's wrong. I'm upset on her behalf. I know she takes her job very seriously and she puts in a LOT of work into this site, and gets mostly grief.

Krikit is hardly here anymore.

I guess we'll agree to disagree. I actually like Kathryn personally, so I don't take any satisfaction in being so critical of her moderating "style." Yes, she puts a lot of work in, but IMHO she's too fast on the draw, too likely to lock a thread instead of steering it in the right direction. I think all she'd have to do is tweak her style just a bit, and she'd be fantastic.

The only criticism I have of Kathryn is her seemingly haphazard enforcement of TOS. She simply isn't consistent.

Many of these 'old timers' that hang around in OT, like to 'stir the pot'.

It's one or more of

--flame-baiting

--name calling

--racist speech

--references to racist speech

--carry overs of prior 'thread-wars' with new attempt to 'win'

--personal attacks

--defamation of character

--sexual innuendos

VJ, even in OT forum, is NOT the place for this. It 'grew' into this, but come on - it's NOT the place for this. This is a 'Family Immigration Web Portal' and this type of behavior needs to stop.

If these 'old timers' decided, en masse, to stop making posts that covered things from this list, then this discussion would be moot.

If you really have a grudge, if you really want to pick on someone here because of prior altercations - hey ! Give it a rest !

But listen - this is all down to choice, ya? You've made a choice to hang out here, you've made a choice to throw-down in OT. Conscious or unconscious, drunk or sober, you made a choice.

Choices have consequences, always, yes? Keep making 'those choices' and 'other stuff' happens, ya ?

You could, of course, make another choice - to find the RIGHT WEB PORTAL to play in. VJ, these days, isn't the right web portal for you.

Happy Tuesday !

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

Again, Darnell, the same question could be posed to you. Isn't it against TOS to tell people to leave VJ?
