I think what should have been done is what WAS done for the most part: let the words stand as they are as the petard on which the posters might hoist themselves. Anything slanderous (I can't recall if there was anything) should be removed. I would never have called for a suspension or a lock or a deletion. Not my bag for this sort of talk.

No, noteworthy that an aside about a handjob got deleted (and a sh!tstorm apparently started) but when there was frank discussion about other sexual acts performed by VJ members nothing happened. I would have preferred all these posts stand. You won't find me standing in the censorship corner too often.

The BJ comment was in OT, the handjob in the UK forum. It was a personal anecdote and was not an insult, but a description of a very strange date.

At this point, I'm tempted to shrug my shoulders and say: meh.

Tbone...buddy. You and I agree on a lot, but how VJ is moderated isn't one of them--and hey that's cool. But I doubt we'll agree on this either. Anyway...

The position of regional moderator (I think that's what it's officially called?) was created for a single individual because even back then, Ewok understood that this single individual couldn't be trusted to handle the responsibilities of a real moderator, and so created a position where any damage would be limited in scope. (why such a person was elevated to *any* level of responsibility at all is still beyond my ability to grasp)

I see the creation of this position as a bone thrown for absolutely ridiculous reasons, and I'll have no part in lending any kind of legitimacy to it. I proudly coined the term, and as long as the individual continues to flaunt the TOS and mistreat other VJers, I think it's fitting. Respect is earned, so let him earn it and I'll gladly stop.

I would like to formally let everyone know that "Charles!" will be helping out the mod team by taking on an extra role as a "Regional Forums" Moderator. This is a special role as these specific forums often need someone familiar with the eb-and-flow of the atmosphere unique to that area of the site. For other site moderation issues please ping the other mod team members for help -- but in the future we will have the added benefit of Charles to help out in the Regional Forums.

Thanks Charles for volunteering time to help out!

Well I don't think we should really be resurrecting that old point, but I will say that Charles hasn't really held back when it comes to baiting other members on other parts of the site. I reported an OT post of his directed at me a couple of weeks ago where he responded to an on-topic post I made in a thread with something along the lines of "who cares what you think". Well one of the global mods agreed with me that it and the subsequent posts were antagonistic personal attacks and deleted them for that reason. No apology was offered, no admission of wrongdoing on his part. In point of fact, I have never seen Charles' once acknowledge or apologise for wrongdoing on his part.

As far as moderation goes - you expect these people to be approachable and at least adhere themselves to the standards they are trying to enforce.

As I said in the other thread - I don't believe that Charles' post in the other thread was innocent. I freely admit that I have a bias where he is concerned, but what I think is that Charles deliberately created an ambiguous situation in order to make a personal attack against Maven that could be explained away as misunderstanding. That would be entirely consistent with his past MO and post history.

Fair enough. I do remember Sheriff Uling, thought he was a regular mod, but if you say he was a regional mod then I believe. But my larger point still stands: the reason for promotion to less-than-a-moderator instead of a full moderator was obvious. Ewok even backed that up with his "give him a chance" and "the past is the past" pep talks. (Ewok will probably dispute this, but all you need to do is visit the link in my previous post, and it's painfully obvious that this was not a promotion based on merit or ability.)

And again, if he wants to uphold the TOS instead of violate it, and if he wants to treat members with the respect they deserve, then I'll reciprocate. Until then, "Junior Woodchuck Moderator" is about the mildest of terms I can think of.
