Hi Everyone,

My husband is French, but because of his age did not have to do the mandatory military service. I think a few years before he turned 18, France stopped requiring military service. We've asked for proof that he did not need to serve, but the government office keeps telling him that there is no document available. Has anyone else gone through the IR-1 / CR-1 process in France? If so, did you need the military cert? I'm stressing a little since he doesn't think it's big deal.

Thanks for help

Hi, I have my interview in Paris and I'm a French citizen. I didn't do any military service either. I just did 1 day called "journée de préparation et d'appel à la défense". At the end of that day I received a certificate stating I participated in this day that replaced the military service. My plan is to bring that certificate for the interview. I can tell you if it works or not.

Good luck on your journey

Bruno,

Thanks, that would be helpful. I'll tell him about the "journeed de prep" and see if he's done that. I would hate for him to get to the interview and have to wait longer for something like this.

Lotofpatience,

I looked at the link of documents but it's not very clear. My husband was not required to do any military service because they have stopped making it mandatory, but it still seems that he needs justification for that.

Thanks to both of you for responding, and good look on your timelines.

I've looked the link too but I'm not sure if it's up to date because as you say the military service doesn't exist anymore and they explain what document to bring to prove the service or to justify why it wasn't done. I'm hoping it's no longer relevant and that the JAPD certif is enough.

here is a link to the france/america couples thread : http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/45156-franceamerica-couples/page__st__1155

if you scroll down to post #1169 they are talking about the JAPD certif and it seems the embassy in Paris doesn't even care about that. I'm just bringing mine in case, so I think your husband was right to think it's "not a big deal".

Good luck for your journey and i'll keep you updated.

Good luck on your journey

Yes take that certificate, that is what you need.

Proof of military service and or exemption is also necessary if the Beneficiary is a foreign national living in France, such as Algeria, Egypt. Embassy wants proof to make sure beneficiary is not a deserter or dodge their military service. Embassy will not issue a visa to such a person.

Good luck on yoour journey.

I got my interview today and when they ask about military service I gave them my "certificat individuel de participation à l'appel de préparation à la défense" (sorry, not my fault if the name is so long) aka the JAPD certificate. They had no problem with that. They just ask to have a look at the original of the certificate and kept a copy so don't forget to bring the original to the embassy.

As I applied for a K-1 and your doing a CR-1 it might differ but I'm confident if your husband goes with this certificate it will be fine.

Hope it brought you relief you

Good luck on your journey
