Arizona Sheriff: Border Patrol Has Retreated from Parts of Border Because It’s ‘Too Dangerous’

Friday, August 13, 2010

By Terence P. Jeffrey, Editor-in-Chief

(CNSNews.com) - Sheriff Larry Dever of Cochise County, Ariz., one of four Arizona counties contiguous with the U.S-Mexico border, said Friday that the U.S. Border Patrol has pulled back from parts of the border in his and neighboring counties because manning those areas has become too dangerous.

“And you frankly have Border Patrolmen--and I know this from talking to Border Patrol agents—who will not allow their agents to work on the border because it is too dangerous,” Dever told CNSNews.com in a videotaped interview. “Now what kind of message is that for crying out loud?”

Dever, a native of Cochise County, has been in local law enforcement in the county for three decades. He was elected the county sheriff in 1996.

Dever stressed that the Border Patrolmen are ready and willing to perform their mission of securing the border, but that Border Patrol managers had determined that in “some places” the danger was too great and they wanted to avoid the risk of an international incident such as a cross-border firefight.

“Now, I am telling you, the agents, you give them a mission, you tell them what you want them to do, they will go do it,” said Dever. “I mean, these guys for the most part are warriors, they are soldiers.

“Then you have middle management and upper management that says: No, it’s too dangerous right there and we’re going to cause an international incident if there’s shooting across the line, back and forth,” said Dever.

“Well, I say: Come, bring it on. Let’s cause the international incident,” he said.

Dever said there were places where the Border Patrol had pulled back from the border in his county and in neighboring areas both in Arizona and New Mexico.

He pointed out that in Pinal County, 70 miles north of the border, the Bureau of Land Management has put up a sign along a drug smuggling corridor to warn American citizens away from the region because it is too dangerous.

CNSNews.com provided Customs and Border Protection with a transcript of Sheriff Dever's statement about the Border Patrol pulling back from parts of the border in his area because it is too dangerous.

"There are areas down there in the Tucson Sector where for officer safety reasons, officers aren’t up on the line. For whatever reason--it may be a remote area," said a CBP spokesperson. "We still have the means to detect entry, whether it is a sensor or a scoped vehicle. So the entry is detected, but the apprehension of the undocumented migrant isn’t affected until they reach a safe area.”

If Border Patrol think areas of our border are too dangerous for them to patrol surely it's time to send in a force that is capable of dealing with the situation - The U.S. Army.

Yet Obummer and his band of inept clowns publicly state otherwise. They claim the border is more secure than it has ever been. Like ostriches...they have their heads buried in the....

If you guys read all the way to the bottom, it says they're still apprehended... just not in the unsafe areas. It doesn't sound like they're "too dangerous" to patrol, it sounds like there's too much of a chance of an unfavorable international incident.

Despite what they're trying to get across in that article - that CBP is outgunned - that's not the case at all. What they're trying to do with the unsafe areas is prevent an incident that will cross the border from happening.

Weren't those two set free at the end of Bush's term?

Google border Patrol and outgunned and you find many, many references that say it is indeed a true statement.

Second point, yes the Senate Judiciary Committee led by Senator Feinstein urged President Bush to commute their sentences.

If they are outgunned, we need to give them more guns.

If they are outnumbered, we need to increase their numbers.

It's not rocket science, really.

They may still be apprehended if they are detected, but more illegals and narcotics get through than get interdicted. So the border is not secure...dangerous or not. The border should and must be secure. It should have been a priority decades ago.

Anyway...who cares what Mexico thinks. They sure don't give a damned about us unless it benefits them. It's a one-way street. With friends like that...who needs enemies.

Google border Patrol and outgunned and you find many, many references that say it is indeed a true statement.

References from whom? It's not the border patrol agents saying "we're outgunned so we're pulling out." It's someone else saying that, typically sheriffs or local law endforcement.

In the story posted by the OP, the border patrol never said they were outgunned.

Second point, yes the Senate Judiciary Committee led by Senator Feinstein urged President Bush to commute their sentences.

So in the biggest case of "abuse" so far we have two guys who did a little time but then were released. Not exactly a war zone going on down there like they're making it out to be in the news.

They may still be apprehended if they are detected, but more illegals and narcotics get through than get interdicted. So the border is not secure...dangerous or not. The border should and must be secure. It should have been a priority decades ago.

I'm not disagreeing at all, but in the story the CBP agent said the folks in those "danger areas" are still detected and apprehened.

Anyway...who cares what Mexico thinks. They sure don't give a damned about us unless it benefits them. It's a one-way street. With friends like that...who needs enemies.

Investors and lobbyists care. It's hard to move factories to Mexico if we're not on good terms with them.

I'm 100% with you though, if we happen to "outgun" some criminals out there in the desert and some of our air support or arty lands on their side... well, too freakin bad.

What does Israel do when they "accidentally" cross a line? Hands-down the best foreign policy and border security in the world. But, we could never do that because our govt. isn't interested in security or safety... they're interested in dollars. The fact is Mexico and illegals crossing the border really aren't that big of a threat to our daily life. In 30 years, we're going to collectively say, "Aye chihuahua. What happend to da ju ess aeey, mang?"

Exactly. The border is shared by TWO countries, and TWO countries need to make efforts to secure it, from exits and entrances.

This isn't the US border with the big Mexican baby abyss with ALL these people that NEED saving. Unlike what some other open-border fans tend to think.
