Can I apply for permit to travel later?

Im about to submit my AOS package, and will include my EAD in it as well. I am not planning on travelling to my home country until next summer (May-June 07 sometime), and my question is if I can wait and apply for the travel permit then, 1-131? Or do I have to submit that one now too, regardless of when I want to use it to travel outside US? Would save me some money if I dont have to apply for it right now, all these application fees are killing us... Thanks everyone! Ladyzoul.

YOu can apply for AP anytime after you apply for AOS (or at the same time too).

You may have your GC by the time you want to travel, so you may not need to apply for AP at all.

We are planning the same. We will be going to Germany(hopefully) in May 2007. We only applied for an EAD with our AOS so hopefully we will have the green card before then but if not we will be applying for AP as well!Good Luck!

Oh yeah.. what would the OP do if a close relative were to get in a accident a few months from now that would require the OP to leave the US in a hurry. You never know when you may need to travel. For this reason, I believe that every person who is filing an I-485 should file a I-131 as well. It's cheap insurance in case you have to travel on short notice.
